Blood Vessels for GCSE Students

The document describes the three main types of blood vessels: arteries, veins, and capillaries. It notes that arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry blood toward the heart, and capillaries are the tiny vessels that supply cells with nutrients and remove waste. The document then elaborates on key differences between the three types of blood vessels, such as their structure, width of the lumen, and presence of valves.

BLOOD VESSELS

OBJECTIVE:
ARTERIES,VEINS, CAPILLARIES
ENGAGE
CAN YOU POINT OUT TWO SIMILARITIES IN THE PICTURES GIVEN
BELOW
EXPLORE
Tie yarn to learn about veins and arteries

• We are going to make long

threads that are of our height and
compare how blood travels in the
vessels
• You will be given three colour
threads to complete the activity.
EXPLAIN
BLOOD VESSELS
Three main blood vessels-
a) Arteries – carry blood away from the heart
b) Veins – carry blood towards the heart
c) Capillaries – tiny vessels
ELABORATE
BLOOD VESSELS

• Arteries
I. Have thick muscular walls containing elastic fibres to withstand high
pressure of blood and maintain the blood pressure as it recoils after the
blood has passed through
II. Have a narrow lumen to maintain high pressure
III. As arteries divide more as they get further away from the heart, they
get narrower
IV. The narrow vessels that connect arteries to capillaries are called arterioles
BLOOD VESSELS

• Veins
I. Have a large lumen as blood pressure is low
II. Contain valves to prevent the backflow of blood as it is
under low pressure
III. Veins also get narrower the further away they are from the
heart
IV. The narrow vessels that connect capillaries to veins are
called venules
BLOOD VESSELS
• Capillaries
• Have walls that are one cell thick so that substances can easily diffuse in
and out of them
• Have ‘leaky’ walls so that blood plasma can leak out and form tissue fluid
surrounding cells
BLOOD VESSELS
BLOOD VESSELS
ARTERIES CAPILLARIES VEINS

Function Carry blood away from Supply all cells with their Return blood to the heart at low
the heart requirements pressure
Take away waste products
Structure of wall Thick, Strong Very thin, only one cell Thin
Contain muscles, elastic thick Mainly fibrous tissue
fibres and fibrous tissue Contain far less muscle and elastic
tissue than arteries

Lumen Narrow Very narrow Wide

Varies with heart beat
Valves No No Yes
