Theological and Cardinal virtues
WHAT IS VIRTUES?
• Virtues are gifts from God that lead us to live in a close relationship with
him. Virtues are like habits. They need to be practiced; they can be lost
if they are neglected.
• What are the theological virtues explained?
• The Theological Virtues are
1. Faith
2. Hope
3. Charity.
These virtues are supernatural capacities to receive three divine powers from
Jesus' fullness of grace. These virtues are called theological, or divine,
because they unite us directly to God.
FAITH
• Faith. 1814 Faith is the theological virtue by which we believe in God and
believe all that he has said and revealed to us, and that Holy Church
proposes for our belief, because he is truth itself. By faith "man freely
commits his entire self to God."78 For this reason the believer seeks to
know and do God's will.

CHARITY
What is cardinal virtues?
• The cardinal virtues are four virtues of mind and character in both classical philosophy
and Christian theology. They are;
1. Prudence
2. Justice
3. Fortitude
4. Temperance
• . They form a virtue theory of ethics. The term cardinal comes from the Latin cardo
(hinge); virtues are so called because they are regarded as the basic virtues required for
a virtuous life.
PRUDENCE
• Prudence is the cardinal virtue that “disposes the practical reason to
discern, in every circumstance, our true good and to choose the right
means for achieving it” (Catechism, no. 1835). Prudence enables us to
choose good means to a good end.
JUSTICE
• Justice is the virtue that perfects the will. Unless all people are by nature
equal before God, there is no natural requirement on humanity's part to be
just. Justice regulates the voluntary actions whereby one person is brought
into contact with another.
FORTITUDE
• Fortitude is one of the four cardinal virtues. It is commonly called
courage; however, it is different from what we often think of. Fortitude is
always reasoned and reasonable. The cardinal virtue of fortitude involves
practicing what is good and just when it is difficult or even dangerous.
TEMPERANCE
• The simplest definition of temperance is “the virtue which moderates in us
the inordinate desire for sensible pleasure, keeping it within the limits
assigned by reason and faith.” (Divine Intimacy).
What is the difference
between theological virtues
and cardinal virtues?
• The three most important virtues are called theological virtues because
they come from God and lead to God. The cardinal virtues are human
virtues, acquired by education and good actions.
