ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of membranes

inside a cell through which proteins and other
molecules move. The membranes of the ER form
flattened sacs called cisternae.
Processes can take place inside the cisternae separated
from the cytoplasm. The membranes of the ER are
continuous with the outer nuclear membrane.

The ER can be classified in two functionally distinct forms:

 the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER)
 the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER)

Both types are present in plant and animal cells.

2
ROUGH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM
The rough endoplasmic reticulum (rough ER) is a
membranous organelle that has a large surface area
covered in ribosomes.

Site of protein synthesis. They can be found either

free In cytoplasm or on RER.

Function
It is involved with the production,
folding, quality control and dispatch
of some proteins.

Location
Rough ER is found throughout the cell
but the density is higher near the
nucleus and the Golgi apparatus.

3
SMOOTH ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM

By name, its called smooth as it lacks

ribosomes on the membrane surface. Its
function is to produce lipids and steroids.
Steroids such as choletrol and oestrogen.
SER also plays a major role in storing
calcium ions.

SER is abundant in muscle cells, as calcium ions are

involved in muscle contraction.

SER is also found in liver cells to help in metabolism.

GOLGI BODY ( O R G O L G I A P PA R AT U S , G O L G I C O M P L E X )

An organelle found in the eukaryotic cell. It consists of fluid filled, stacked cisternae
(flattened sacs) with vesical surrounding the edges.
Cisternae are constantly forming at one end and then being made to Golgi vesical in
the other end.

Golgi vesicles:
Carries content to other part of the cell, often to
cell membrane for excretion. The Golgi
apparatus gathers simple molecules and
combines them to make molecules that are more
complex. The Golgi vesicles then takes those big
molecules, packages them in vesicles, and either
stores them for later use or sends them out of the
cell (secretion). Golgi vesicles are also used to
make lysosomes.

Cisternae + vesicles = Golgi apparatus

It collects and processes molecules within the cell, particularly
protein from the rough endoplasmic reticulum. It does this by the
hundreds of enzymes it contains.
After processing, it transports the molecules to other part of the
cell (or out of the cell) using Golgi vesicles.
The pathway the molecules use for secretion is known as the
secretory pathway.

Golgi apparatus produces mucin (mucus) in In plant cell divisions, Golgi enzymes are
gut and gas exchange systems. involved in synthesis of new cell walls.

Examples of modification of molecules:

• Sugar + proteins + glycoproteins Important components of membranes

• Sugars + lipids + glycolipids Important molecules in cell signaling
