Scientific Investigation: Grade 7 - Ste

The document outlines the steps of the scientific method which include making observations and identifying a problem, developing a hypothesis, experimentation by identifying variables and setting up control and experimental setups, recording both qualitative and quantitative data, analyzing results, and drawing a conclusion. It also provides examples of using the scientific method to solve problems like determining which kitchen material gets rid of ants faster through an experiment.

LET US PRAY
Lord God,
kami. Sa ngalan ng Diyos Amang nasa langit.

Amen.

= Scientific Method
Hey guys, ants are all around
the house. How can I get rid of
them? What do I need to do?
Can you help me determine
which kitchen materials would
help to get rid of ants faster?
Let us know the problem Can you help me determine which
among these kitchen materials
would help to get rid of ants
faster? I will use these materials
and record how long will it take
the ants to leave the table.

Vinegar? Salt?
Let’s do some background check!

According to my research, ants cannot

bear the smell of vinegar. The pungent
odor of vinegar covers up materials at
home, preventing them from being
detected by ants. Moreover, spreading salt
near nooks and corners from where ants
enter the house will help keep ants away.
Can you help me make some wise guess?
What do you think is the
kitchen material that would
easily get rid of ants faster How will we know? What do
based on my research? we need to do to prove your
guess?
Vinegar?

Salt?
I made salt solution (1 cup of water
It’s Testing time! with ¼ cup salt) and vinegar solution
(1cup water and ¼ cup vinegar) and
spray it on the table.

After using the kitchen

materials, I was able to record
the following data below:

Kitchen material
Salt Vinegar

Time (the ants take to 5 mins. 1 min 45 seconds

leave the table) 25 seconds
1. What is/are the thing/s or condition/s that we
change?
- We change the kitchen materials used to get
rid of ants
2. What is/are the thing/s or condition/s that we
did not change or we kept constant?
- the ants, table or place where ants are found
are the things/condition we keep constant
3. What condition/s did we measure?
- We measured the time it took the ants to leave
the table in 2 different kitchen materials.
The conditions, things or factors that we change, measure and kept
constant in the experiment is called VARIABLES.
Types of Variables

The factor The factor The factor

Based from our problem, can you
complete the table below?

Independent Dependent Controlled

(manipulated) (responding) (constant)

Kitchen Time it takes Ants and

materials the ants to table or place
(salt and leave the where ants
vinegar) table are found
Let’s make conclusion! Based from the data we recorded
and gathered, which kitchen
material would get rid of ants
faster? Why do you say so?

Kitchen material
Salt vinegar
Time it takes to 5 mins. 25seconds 1 min 45seconds
leave the table

Therefore, the vinegar made the ants leave faster

than salt. It took only 1 minute and 45 seconds for
the ants to leave.
Questions:
1. What was I testing?
I am testing which among the salt and vinegar would get rid of ants faster?

2. What was my hypothesis?

I guess, the vinegar made the ants leave the table in a shorter time.

3. What was I measuring?

I am measuring the time the ants take to leave the table

4. How do I know if my hypothesis is true?

I conducted an experiment to prove if my hypothesis is correct.

realized that the sliced apple
turned brown after
sometime. He tried to put a

NCE TASK
Anita, a Biology student conducted an
experiment to find out how light and plant
fertilizer affects the growth of a particular type of
plant. She grew four plants of the same type
and treated them differently. After five weeks,
the plants looked as shown below.
Similar to what we did in this presentation

damp cotton or jar with more water?
Here are the materials you will be needing:

2 identical jars mongo seeds cotton marker, paper

and tape
water
You Try this activity 2. Damp a cotton with water and place
it with a jar which labelled as Plant A.
Procedure
:
1. Put a label on both jars as
Plant A and Plant B.

3. Put 5 mongo seeds on a jar which

labelled as Plant A.
You Try this activity
Procedure
:
4. Place a cotton on a jar 7. Draw and make a table to show
labeled as Plant B your observation.

5. Add water of about 1/3 on the

jar, then add 5 mongo seeds in it.
