Gravure
Gravure is a printing method in which an image is applied to a printing
substrate by use of a metal plate. The image to be reproduced is etched
into the metal plate, sometimes with the use of a laser . The metal plate is
put in ink during the process and then wiped clean before putting it on the
substrate. Gravure, is a long process that also costs quite a bit more than
other printing methods. To create a Gravure print you have to be highly
skilled and patient, but even though it takes a long time, with lots of
processes and waiting, the result is very good. You do not need technology
for this, apart from ink, cloths and water. End result:
Letterpress
Letterpress printing is relief printing of text and image using a press with a
"type-high bed" printing press and movable type, in which a reversed,
raised surface is inked and then pressed into a sheet of paper to obtain a
positive right-reading image. In addition to the direct impression of inked
movable type onto paper or another receptive surface, letterpress is also
the direct impression of inked printmaking blocks such as photo-etched
zinc "cuts" (plates), linoleum blocks, wood engravings, etc., using such a
press.
Screen Printing
Screen printing was first used by the Chinese almost 2000 years ago. They used human hair stretched across a
wooden frame to form the screen. To that they attached a stencil made from leaves stuck together into
different shapes. This was probably the first application of screen printing ever. Equipment Used In Screen
Printing No matter what kind of screen printing machine you have, there is some basic equipment that will
be required. The stencil or screen is of prime importance since it determines the design and image output.
It refers to the frame, the mesh and the photosensitive material on which the image is created. The
Squeegee is the rubber held in a rigid handle. Ink of course. The substrate refers to the surface on which
the design is to be printed. The machine base, which holds the substrate and allows the screen to print on
it and is often the base of the entire screen printing unit. Applications Of Screen Printing The substrate or
surface on which screen printing can be carried out are too many to be named. Any surface that can be
stretched and printed on is a surface for screen printing. Posters, computers, signs, flyers, advertisements
on buses, t-shirts and even watch dials are screen printed. It doesn’t take long to make, and costs very
little. Anyone can do it.
Offset Litho
Offset lithography is a printing technique which is widely used around the world. Most
books, newspapers, and magazines are printed using offset lithography, and this
printing technique is widely regarded as the workhorse of printing, because it is
fast, efficient, cheap, and relatively easy. The first step in offset lithography is
making a plate with the image to be printed. If the image is in black and white,
only a single plate is required, because the plate can simply be inked with black
ink. Color images are produced using a four-color separation process, in which four
different plates are made for the cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black) inks; when
the plates are printed, the colors blend together visually, creating a color image.
