Why Quality Center ?
QualityCenter simplifies and organizes test management by
giving you systematic control over the testing process.
QualityCenter guides you through the requirements
specification, test planning, test execution, and defect tracking
phases of the testing process.
Quality
Center offers integration with Mercury testing tools
(WinRunner, Quick Test Professional, Load Runner, and Visual
API-XP) as well as third-party and custom testing tools, and
requirement and configuration management tools.
Bylinking Quality Center to your e-mail system, defect tracking
information can be shared by all application development, quality
assurance, customer support, and information systems
personnel.
Difference between QC and Test Director?
Test director is of version 8.0 and QC is of version 8.2 , so QC is latest
version.
Data is stored in File System in Test Director, but in QC data is stored in
Data base.
In QC we can link the defects but in Test Director we cannot link the
defects.
Authentication is required in QC but for Test Director we don’t need
Authentication.
In QC we have 5 tabs but in Test Director we have only 4 tabs.

Modules of QC
There are 6 modules/tabs on LHS in QC, they are
Requirements :- capture the requirements
Test plan :- used to create test plans
Test lab :- used to execute the test plans
Defects: - used for tracking the defects.
Business component :- process testing.
Dashboard :- for real time project tracking.
Requirement Module
It is used to store all requirements related to a testing project.
Requirements are specified in QC by creating requirement
tree.
Requirement tree is graphical representation of requirements.
Requirements can also be linked to test created in test plan
module , defect in defect module
If a test requirement changes u can immediately identify the
test cases and defects
Out Look of Requirement module
NOTE:- Click the new req panel on the top of the box and add
the new requirement. You can also add child requirement to
the parent requirement.
Test Plan Module
Creating new test in Test plan
In Test plan module, first u have to create a folder and then u
have to create test in the new folder which can be done
Manually or automatically.
To create a test, select new test icon on the left top of the
window, “create new test box will open”.
Here Demo folder is created and in that test scenario is created
and in this test scenario, we have to add test plans.
By going to design step editor column, we can create test cases as
shown above.
Above diagram shows how test cases are written in Test plan
module for one test scenario.
Test lab module
Test lab module is used to run the test cases.
The test run process begins with creating the test set tree and
then running the tests.
Initially a test set folder is created.
Depending on the testing goal u can add test to the test set
folder.
It can include both automation and manual test.
You can set the date and time of execution of the test set.

Once test is run, its status changes accordingly.
Running Test cases
Manual Run:- Running a test can be done by
selecting the test and clicking the run icon on the
top, it will run but u have to change the options while
running.
Automatic Run:- This can be done by selecting the
test case we want to run, change the option to
automatic and click run. Automatically script will be
generated.
We can set our own flow of execution and give
condition as per necessary.
Defect module
Various functionalities that can be done in Defect module are:-
• Create a Defect
• Modify a defect
• Email a Defect
• Link a defect
• Add defect to Favorites.
How to create new Defect
sending defect through email.
Linking defects to test
Go to test plan module, select the test for which we want to
add defect and select “link defects tab” on the top and click
“existing defect icon on top of the page.”
Generating reports in QC (Defect module)
In Defect tab we can perform many actions like…
•Generating reports
•Generating graph
