INTRODUCTION
This presentation illustrate the different
types of window coverings & materials
which are used to cover a window to
manage sunlight and reflected light by
different types of materials.…
WINDOW COVERINGS
ARE MATERIAL USED TO COVER A WINDOW TO
MANAGE SUNLIGHT, TO PROVIDE ADDITIONAL
WEATHERPROOFING, TO ENSURE PRIVACY OR FOR
PURELY DECORATIVE PURPOSES.
CURTAINS
Curtains provide insulation and privacy
and dress windows in a variety of styles,
colors and textures
MATERIALS:
•Cotton
•Polyester
•Silk
•Organza
•Linen
Properties
Curtain rods
Curtain rods and poles can be functional, decorative, or a combination of both. They
come in many lengths, diameters and styles.
Basic rods
•Basic rods are strictly utilitarian. They are made of metal or plastic and are
available in various lengths. Most are adjustable. They are not as attractive as
decorative rods, since they are designed to be completely hidden by the curtain
heading.
•Basic rods are useful when sheers and curtains are used together,
Varieties of Window Dressing – Tab Top Curtains
Tab top curtains are a simple panel of fabric, but instead of folding over at the top to
form a tube like the rod-pocket curtain, they have rectangular loops of fabric at the
top. Just slide the curtain rod through the tabs. There are four variations of the tab
top curtain:
1.Basic tab – fabric loops line the top of the curtains
2.Hidden tab top curtains – the tabs can't be seen from the front
3.Button tab top curtains – each tab appears to be "buttoned" on (usually the button
is just decorative and not functional)
4.Grommet tab top curtains – instead of a fabric tab, these curtains hang from the
rod with large metal eyelets
Tab-top curtains
feature fabric panels that hang from
fabric loops or tabs; variations include tie tops, clip/ring
tops
Decorative rods
• These curtain rods are designed to be visible. They therefore serve both a useful
and a decorative purpose.
• Brackets can be made to take one, two, or even three rods at once,
• Decorative rods also often come in a set with matching holdbacks and finials.
Drapery accessories
•Finials(prevent the curtains from falling off the rod by capping the ends, )
•Rings (The number of rings you need will depend on the size of your curtains: allow one
ring every 15 to 20 cm for best results)
•Holdbacks(designed to hold curtains to the sides of the window. )
•Hooks(curtains are tied back with a band of fabric, a braided cord, ribbons or tassels)

DRAPES
Drapes are large panels of fabric suspended
from a "track", i.e. a rail equipped with
gliders which hold the curtain hooks. Pulling
a cord activates a mechanism that opens
and closes the drapes.
TAIL
SCARF
Jabots can be separate pieces or
simply the opposite ends of the
swag that fall down along the
sides of the window in soft folds
or pleats . The term jabot refers
to a short section of fabric that
falls in soft folds at the outside of
a window treatment.
Swags & Jabots
Traditionally, swags and jabots are found on more
formal window treatments; the choice of fabric and the
method of hanging or draping the fabric make the
swag/jabot combination suitable for any window.
A swag is a piece of fabric that
drapes over a decorative rod or is
pleated onto a mounting board
that spans across the top of a KNOB

Dressing Windows
•There are two main types of window covering: rigid and
supple.
Rigid window covering
•used to filter light or keep it out.
•If only purpose is to filter light we can choose from many options. Among
them: printed "roller" blinds, PVC or aluminum Venetian blinds or fabric
verticals.
•When it comes to patios, family rooms or the greenhouse, the solar blanket
is an interesting choice as it blocks heat in summer and cold in winter.

BLINDS
A window blind is a window covering composed of long strips of
fabric or rigid material. Window blinds reduce the heat from
sunlight.
TYPES OF BLINDS:
•Roman Blinds
•Roller Blinds
•Vertical Blinds
•Wooden Blinds
VERTICAL BLINDS
Insulating blinds
Made of synthetic materials, they are designed to filter the sun's rays
used on large windows that are exposed to the afternoon sun and which, as a result, may let in
excessive heat.
Wood blinds
Also capable of being fitted with a roller mechanism, wood blinds are made of 1- to 2-in. slats
that can be adorned with decorative tape. slats create a louvered effect. Wood blinds can be fitted
with three types of roller mechanisms: string, chain or tactile,
Fabric blinds
they allow more or less unhindered access to windows, and provide just the right amount of
opacity.
They can be divided into two categories: commercial and home-made. The first category
includes the traditional fabric vertical blind which in turn includes the Serenette blind, made of
differently pleated slats that provide varying degrees of transparency.
Natural-fibre blinds
Roman blinds made of natural fibres. They can take on the texture of wood slats, straw,
tortoiseshell or bamboo.

VALANCE
One of the most versatile window dressings, valances
vary in length and shape and are used alone or over the
top of shades, curtains, drapes or even miniblinds. A
valance is hung across the top of a window, often
covering curtain hardware. A valance can be pleated,
gathered or draped from a rod, or it can be stapled to a
mounting board.
