URBAN INSERT

We are TWIN BROTHERS from a small village

named gangolli.
We have chosen architecture course just to
make sure that our art skills don’t die with
the career we choose.
We took 3 long years to adjust with
this environment may be because of
the difference between city and
village and the differences in
language and culture.

We were too afraid of this alien

environment. For example for the
first three years we used to go to
main building in the break mainly
because if you have to go the
department wash room you have to
go along HOD room and staff room.

Turning Point
It was just after 6th sem. We were
in our home town where we met
our high school kannada lecturer
Madhukar Sir. He told us we were
good students and also he used to
show lord shiva’s sculpture made
by gireesh to each new batch.!!!
We were surprised. We felt that if
this is known earlier only, we could
have done more sculptures and
more work. We never came to
know that he was expecting us to
do more.
From then we have decided not to
miss our present opportunity in
the same manner..
And more importantly we came to
know that we are SPECIAL.
For the sake of design project the whole site is divided into
parts.
The area along mahadwar road is considered as part A. It is
densely populated area where we could only give
interventions.
The area which is at the south side of the fort is our part B. It
is full of green fields with few random houses.

Some of the pictures here help us to visualize Part A

When we had been to the open part of the site (Part B), it seemed to be so
meaningful with nature. The only 2 features that really disturbed the flow of
the greenery were the railway track and a group of residential and illegal
industrial buildings.
Other than those it was a beautiful site to go and take an evening walk. Looking
at the moat reflecting the Belgaum Fort was really eye pleasing.
Another major thing about the place is that, if you stand right on the ridge of
the moat, the monumental “Suvarna soudha” is seen at the horizon.
