WHAT IS
WHAT IS CLOUD COMPUTING???
CLOUD
COMPUTING?
CLOUD COMPUTING
Provision of computational resources on
demand via a network.
Computing is done in remote location( out in
the clouds) rather than on your desktop of
portable device.
Users do not have or need knowledge, owner,
ownership in the computer infrastructure.
Users simply rent the software, paying only for
what they use.
History of Cloud computing
The underlying concept of cloud computing dates back to the
1960s, when John McCarthy opined that "computation may
someday be organized as a public utility."
The actual term "cloud" borrows from telephony in that
telecommunications companies, who until the 1990s primarily
offered dedicated point-to-point data circuits, began
offering Virtual Private Network (VPN) services with comparable
quality of service but at a much lower cost.
Amazon played a key role in the development of cloud computing by
modernizing their Data centres after the dot-com bubble .
In 2007, Google, IBM and a number of universities embarked on a large
scale cloud computing research project.
4 Cloud Deployment Models
Private cloud
enterprise owned or leased
Community cloud
shared infrastructure for specific community
Public cloud
Sold to the public, mega-scale infrastructure
Hybrid cloud
composition of two or more clouds
Characteristics of cloud computing.
On demand self service
Cost effective
High speed
Avoids capital expenditure
Transparency
Scalability
Security
Monitoring
Use of cloud computing in IT
laboratories
Can prove to be super efficient if used in
practical sessions in educational institutions.
The basic idea is that the students will use the
cloud to perform the practical using their own
systems.
Only requirements will be a computer and
internet connection.
Software and necessary information will be
provided by the institute via cloud.
Benefits
Practical can be performed at any time by the
students.
Location independence
Provide resources and data storage
Increased productivity
Quality of practical sessions enhanced by
providing ebooks and links via cloud.
Assistance provided only during working hours
via cloud from the educational institute
Benefits
Practical sessions can be conducted
even on public holidays and other non
functional days.
Expenditure in making and maintaining
laboratories can be saved.
Optimization of quality of learning in
practical sessions.
Wastage of time can be reduced.
Challenges
Monitoring
Network issues from individuals
Sharing and use of wrong means for
completion of session
Cost of creating and managing a cloud
Solutions
Monitoring can be dealt with ……..
In case of a network issue the respective
individual can perform the practical later and
can get the assistance in next session in brief.
Although persistent network issues should be
dealt by the individual itself.
Sharing can be avoided by using new
softwares which help in getting the typing
speed of the user.
Cost effectiveness
Initial investment for creation of cloud( creating
servers, controlling traffic etc) can prove to be
a bit expensive.
One time investment
Cheaper compared to maintaining
laboratories( upgradation of software and
hardware systems etc.)
Number of laboratories will be considerably
reduced thus saving lot of investment.
This money can be diverted for creation and
maintenance of cloud.
