PLACE VALUE

What is Place Value?

In math, every digit in a
number has a place
value.
PLACE VALUE

Place value can be

defined as the value
represented by a digit in a
number on the basis of its
position in the number.
PLACE VALUE
• The place value of a digit
depends on its position in
a number.
• The value of a digit
depends on its place or
position in a number.
Do you know the
difference between Place
value and Value?
PLACE VALUE
• Ones
• Tens
• Hundreds
• thousands
VALUE
• 4
• 80
• 600
• 3,000 = 3,684
Total Value
PLACE VALUE
• In the place value
chart, the value of
each digit is ten
times the value of the
place to its right.

Listen very carefully and open your book on page 6.
If you have been existing in this world for about
3,285 days, in what year were you born?
Can you give the value of each digit of this
number?

3,285
Now, let us present 3,285 in a Place Value
Chart.
Thousands Hundreds Tens Ones
1000
100 10 10 10 10 1 1
1000
100 10 10 10 10 1 1
1000
3 2 8 15
Starting with the ones place at the
right, each place value is multiplied
by increasing powers of 10. the place
to the left of ones is tens; to the left
of tens is hundreds, meaning 10
times 10; to the left of hundreds is
thousands, meaning 100 times 10.
In 3,285, the digit 5 in the ones place has a
value of 5.
The digit 8 in the tens place has a value of
80.
The digit 2 in the hundreds place has a
value of 200.
The digit 3 in the thousands place has a
value of 3,000.
Take a look at the
table:

Chart.

1000 1
3 2 8 5
3000 200 80 5
We can also say that the numeral 3,285
indicates that there are:
3 sets of thousands;
2 sets of hundreds;
8 sets of tens; and
5 sets of ones.
Example 1. two thousand seven hundred
