Calculate Change of Longitude

This document discusses concepts related to calculating changes in longitude for aircraft navigation. It defines change of longitude as the difference between two meridians expressed in degrees east or west. It provides examples of calculating change of longitude when points are in the same hemisphere by subtracting the smallest longitude from the largest, and when points are in different hemispheres by subtracting each point from 180 degrees and adding the results. Mean longitude is calculated similarly to mean latitude but is rarely used in aviation. Exercises provide practice calculating change of longitude in various scenarios.

Objectives

At the end of the lesson you will be

able to calculate;
Change of Longitude ChLong
Difference in Longitude DLong
Mean Longitude MLong
Change of Longitude (CH LONG) LO: Calculate Ch Long
It is used to express the difference
between two meridians.

Values are expressed in exactly

same manner as Ch Lat.

E & W shows the direction of

travel.

The value of Ch Long can’t exceed

180°
Calculation of Change of Longitude(Both LO: Calculate Ch Long
points in same hemisphere)
Step 1-Find the difference
Example 1- Calculate Ch Long between the 2 points. Simply
between position A 165°W & subtract the smallest from largest.
Position B 103°W? Assume
that the aircraft is flying from
A to B. Step 2- Note the direction of the
change. Anticlockwise-E,
In this case; Clockwise-W
165° - 103° = 62°

In this case, the

aircraft is traveling So the
answer is
from A to B 62°E
(Anticlockwise), so E.
Exercise 1 LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Calculate Ch Long between
position A 009°33’W &
Position B 156°45’W? Assume
that the aircraft is flying from 156 W
A to B.
Step 1-Find the difference
between the 2 points. Simply West East
subtract the smallest from largest.
009 W
Step 2- Note the direction of the
change. Anticlockwise-E,
Clockwise-W
Exercise 2 LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Calculate Ch Long between
position A 153°33’E & Position B
078°44’E? Assume that the
aircraft is flying from A to B. 153 E

Step 1-Find the difference

078 E
between the 2 points. Simply West East
subtract the smallest from largest.

Step 2- Note the direction of the

change. Anticlockwise-E,
Clockwise-W
Exercise 3 LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Calculate Ch Long between
position A 143°24’E & Position B
179 E
179°15’E? Assume that the
aircraft is flying from A to B. 143 E

Step 1-Find the difference

between the 2 points. Simply West East
subtract the smallest from largest.

Step 2- Note the direction of the

change. Anticlockwise-E,
Clockwise-W
Calculation of Change of Longitude(Both LO: Calculate Ch Long
points in different hemisphere) Step 1-Find the difference
Example 1- Calculate Ch Long between 180 & the first point.
between position A 165°W & Step 2-Find the difference
Position B 170°E? Assume between 180 & the second point.
that the aircraft is flying from
Step 3- Add the two together.
A to B.
180° - 165° = 15° Step 4- Note the direction of the
change. Anticlockwise-E,
180° - 170° = 10° Clockwise-W

10° - 15° = 25°

In this case, the aircraft is traveling Answer
from A to B (Clockwise), so W. is 25°W
Exercise 4 LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Calculate Ch Long between
position A 144°23’W & Position
B 103°33’E? Assume that the
aircraft is flying from A to B.
144 W 102 E
Step 1-Find the difference between
180 & the first point.
Step 2-Find the difference between West East
180 & the second point.

Step 3- Add the two together.

Step 4- Note the direction of the

change. Anticlockwise-E,
Clockwise-W
Exercise 5 LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Calculate Ch Long between
position A 077°55’W & Position
B 178°44’E? Assume that the 178 E
aircraft is flying from A to B.

Step 1-Find the difference between

180 & the first point.
Step 2-Find the difference between 077 W
West East
180 & the second point.

Step 3- Add the two together.

Step 4- Note the direction of the

change. Anticlockwise-E,
Clockwise-W
Mean Latitude LO: Calculate Ch Long & D Long
Mean Longitude is calculated in the same way as mean latitude.

It is rarely used in aviation.
