WHAT IS FOUNDATION FRENCH LANGUAGE 2?
Foundation French Language 2 is a language course aimed at
developing your understanding and production of the language at
CEFR level A1/A2.

The course is composed of 2 classes per week. You need to


commit to attending both.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Who is eligible to sign-up?


Foundation French 2 is intended for students who have a basic knowledge
of French (such as Foundation French Language 1/ Delf A1 or end A1 level/
GCSE/National 5/Equivalent) and aims to develop the students’ basic
knowledge of written and spoken French.

How to find out about your level?


If you are not sure about your level, don’t worry!
Students who don’t hold any of the qualifications mentioned above will
take a very short placement test.
LEARN / PLACEMENT TEST

If you hold another level than those mentioned in


the requirements for the course (Foundation French
Language 1, Delf A1/ end of A1 level, GCSE or National
5/Standard Grade)
The first thing you should do after this presentation is
to go to the Learn page and download the placement
test that you will find in the section Course
information (left-hand side menu).

Fill it in without any help or use of a dictionary and


send it back to : audrey.debard@ed.ac.uk
BOOKS

L’Atelier A2 is composed of a Textbook and a Cahier d’activités. Both books are


essential for the course this semester. The textbook will be used during class and
the cahier d’activités for homework or during class.
We will start using the textbook and cahier d’exercices in week 2.

Order it as soon as possible.

CLASS TIMES FOR TUTORIALS

Group 1:  Time: Monday  14:10-16:00

GROUP TEACHING WILL START on the second class of week 1.


There will be no teaching on Monday or Tuesday in week 1.
If you NEED to change groups please use the group change request form that you
will find on the Learn page under “Course information”
CLASSES ON CAMPUS
Inside buildings and especially during classes you will be required to wear a mask.
Room sizes are bigger than usual this semester, to allow for some distancing.
You might find that you would be comfortable not wearing a mask or standing close to
someone else, but please be mindful of others who might feel differently. 

WHERE CAN I FIND MY GROUP AND ACCESS GROUP TOOLS?
Go to : Learn Foundation French Language 2 My Group : Discussion Board and
Emails (in the left-hand side menu). These functions will soon appear on your
Learn page but might not be available just yet. It will show once you are allocated
to a group.
PARTICIPATION

During week 5 and 8 you will work in small groups.


These contributions to the course are important as they will be assessed for
participation and are the opportunity for your tutor to give you some formative
feedback.

We expect these to take place during tutorials as all classes are scheduled to happen on
campus this semester.

In case this set up changes or in case of unforeseeable absences there will be alternatives
put in place.

ASSESSMENTS
Half of the coursework assessments will take place via auto-corrected tests on Learn.

These tests will be available for over 24 hours on Learn from the Thursday evening.
There will be no extension granted but if you encounter technical issues some assistance
can be provided between 9am and 5pm. Simply contact the C.O using
audrey.debard@ed.ac.uk.

Other assignments include the Written test (week 7), the Oral presentation (week 11) and
the tasks set up by your tutor (week 5 and 8). You will get more information on these closer
to the date of each assignment.

In order to access all assignments you need to complete the


DECLARATION OF OWN WORK on Learn in the « Assessment » section.
AFTER FRENCH FOUNDATION 2?

Students who pass the course will be eligible to continue studying

 Foundation French 3 (ELCF07007) OR


 French 1A if you attain a mark of 50% over at first sit OR
 French 1B if you attain a mark of 70% or over at first attempt (not a
resit).

French 1A and French 1B are specialist courses which dedicate a substantial


part of the Learning to the study of Literature and Civilisation as well as the
Language.

By comparison, Foundation courses are Language courses which focus on


developing communicative skills while imparting cultural aspects.

What’s next?
• Complete the placement test : only for those of you who are unsure
of their level because they do not hold one of the qualifications
mentioned earlier.
• Complete the Declaration of Own Work under “Assessment” in Learn.
• Explore the Learn page to familiarise yourself with the content. Some
revisions documents are available in the “
Documents to consult week by week”folder under “Course Materials”
for a refresher.
• If you already know that you need to change groups use the “
group change request form” under “Course information” on Learn.
