Articulation and parts of speech


• pronunciation
• The way in which the words of a language are made to
sound when speaking.
• articulation
• Use of tongue, lips, jaw, and other speech organs to make a
sound. Often the concept is only used for the production of
consonants,
• intonation
• The rise and fall of the voice in speaking. Some texts use
"inflection" instead of intonation to indicate change in pitch.
In the English language . . .
there are eight parts of speech:
1. Nouns
2. Verbs Every word in a sentence
3. Pronouns has a job to do!
4. Adjectives
5. Adverbs
6. Conjunctions
7. Prepositions
8. Interjections
1. Noun: person, place, thing

• Person: Mr. Girish likes to eat spinach.

• Place: Mathura is an old town.

• Thing: A cook requires pots.


Honesty is very important.
2. Verb: shows action or being

• Action: He ran through the


forest.
• Being: He was sad this
morning.
3. Pronoun: takes place of a noun

Akash was studying for the


mid-term exam when he
realized it was three o’clock
in the morning.
4. Adjective: describes a noun

• The beautiful woman wanted a


couple of pairs of shoes.

• The rainy day made us even sadder.


Article: There are three articles: a, an, & the
(Articles are technically adjectives.)

• The bicycle was not only red but shiny.


• A yellow moon always appears in
October.
• An excellent student, Aryan passed all
his exams.
5. Adverb: describes a verb

• The little girl walked happily


through the park.

• The orphan hungrily ate the hot


stew.
6. Conjunctions: joining words
• Manu and Maria loved to cook.
• You will go to school, or you will fail.
• I’m happy because I just got my pay
cheque.
• It has been cloudy since the morning.
7. Prepositions: show position or direction

• The cat was on the table.


• The dog was under the table.
• These are some common prepositions:
• for on to up
• at under above toward
• with between in behind
• from upon into off
8. Interjections: expressive words

• Wow! You knocked that ball out of the


park.
• Oh, you really need to take care of
yourself.
• Huh? What did you say?
• Ah, now I understand the problem.

4. I ran many miles every day, and I couldn’t lose a pound.

5. This quiz was a piece of cake.
