ELEMENTS AND
PRINCIPLE OF ART
Colors ( Natural, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary colors), Shapes
( Geometric Shape and Organic Shape), Harmony, Rhythm and Balance

Prepared by:
Acosta, Tabetha Grace
Jamili, Jane T.
OBJECTIVES:

At the end of the discussions the learners are

expected to:
• understand the concept ofcolor, shapes, principle
of harmony, rythm and balance through painting,
• identity thecolor, shapes, principles of harmony,
rhythm and balance in a painting; and
• create an artwork with principle of arts and
elements on it.
WHAT IS ART?
 According to Webster Dictionary…
 - an art is the expression of application of human creative
skills and imagination, typically in a visual form such as
painting, sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily
for their beauty or emotional power.
ELEMENTS OF ART
 Elements of art are stylistic features that are included within
an art piece to help the artist communicate.
 7 Elements
 1. Line
 2. Shape
 3. Texture
 4. Form
 5. Space
 6. Color
 7. Value
COLOR
-IS THE ELEMENT OF ART THAT IS PRODUCED LIGHT, WHEN STRIKING AN
OBJECT, IS REFLECTED BACK TO THE EYE.
NATURAL COLOR
 - a natural color is one that is
found in nature that is ground,
shifted, washed and in rare
cases, heated to create a desired
hue.
 - In an image: a color which
accurately reproduces the actual
color of the object represented.
 - A color, especially of a fabric,
reminiscent of the muted shades
typically found in nature.
TYPES OF NATURAL PIGMENTS
 1. Natural pigments obtained from plants.
 2. Natural pigments obtained from animals
 3. Natural pigments obtained from minerals.

THE COLOR WHEEL
 - it is an abstract illustrative organization of color hues
around a circle, which shows the relationship between
natural, primary, secondary and tertiary colors.
PRIMARY COLORS
 - this color includes
yellow, blue, and red.
 - These are colors that
can’t be created by
 mixing of other colors.
Instead, they combine to
create secondary colors.
SECONDARY COLORS
 - these are colors made
by mixing of two
primary colors in a given
color space.
 - these secondary colors
are purple, green, orange.
 Red+Blue= Purple
 Blue+ Yellow=Green
 Red + Yellow= Orange

TERTIARY COLOR
 -a tertiary color or intermediate
color is a color made by mixing
full saturation of one primary
color with half saturation of
another primary color and none of
a third primary color, in a given
color space such as, RGB,
CMYK,or RYB.
SHAPE
 - is a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines,
textures, colours or an area enclosed by other shape such as
triangle, circles, and squares.
 - shapes are limited to two dimensions: length and width
 -Organic and Geometric Shape
GEOMETRIC SHAPE
 - are circles, rectangles, squares,
triangles and so on-have the clear
edges one achieves when using
tools to create them.
 - Most geometric shapes are made
by humans, through crystals are also
considered to be geometric despite
the fact that they are made in nature.
ORGANIC SHAPE
 - are shapes with a
natural look and a
flowing and curving
appearance.
 - organic shapes and
forms are typically
irregular or
asymmetrical.
 - organic shapes are
associated with things
from natural world, like
plants and animals.
PRINCIPLE OF ARTS
 - the principles of art represent how the artist uses the elements of art
to create an effect and to help convey the artists intent.
 -there are seven principle of arts.
 1. Balance
 2. Contrast
 3. Emphasis
 4. Movement
 5. Pattern
 6. Rhythm
 7. Harmony

BALANCE
 - refers to the visual weight
of the elements of the
composition. It is a sense that
the painting feels stable and
‘’feels right’’. Imbalance
causes a feeling of discomfort
in the viewer.
 - Balance can be achieved in
three ways.
 A. Symmetry
 B. Asymmetry
 C. Radial Symmetry
SYMMETRY ASYMMETRY
 - in which both sides of a  - in which the composition is
composition have the same balanced due to contrast of any of
elements in the same position, as in the elements of art.
a mirror-image, or the two sides of a  For example, a large circle on one
face. side of a composition might be
balanced by a small square on the
other side.

RADIAL SYMMETRY

 - in which elements are

equally spaced around a
central point, as in the spokes
coming out of the hub of a
bicycle tire.
RHYTHM
 - is created by movement implied through the repetition
of elements of art in a non-uniform but organized way. It
is related to rhythm in music. Unlike pattern, which
demands consistency, rhythm relies on variety.

‘’Undergrowth with Two Figures, 1890’’- Vincent Van Gogh

HARMONY
 - is a principle of art that creates cohesiveness by
stressing the similarities of separate but related parts.
 - it uses elements of art (color, line, shape, form, value,
space and texture) as a vehicle to create a sense of
togetherness among otherwise separate parts.

‘’Bathers at Asnieres’’- George Seurat, 1884

PAINTING
 - it is the practice of applying paint, pigment,
color or other medium to a solid surface.
 - the medium is commonly applied to the base
with a brush, but other implements, such as
knives, sponges and airbrushes, can be used. In
art, the term painting describes both the act and
the result of the action.
