Overview of Surface Technology

This document provides an overview of surface technology. It discusses conventional interfaces such as point-and-click and single user interactions. Surface technology allows multiple simultaneous touch interactions through gestures. Key features include direct manipulation of digital objects, multi-touch detection, multi-user collaboration, and object recognition. The technology uses cameras and infrared light to detect touches and objects on a rear-projected acrylic surface. It has applications in gaming, maps, ordering food, and more. While expensive and not portable, surface technology fundamentally changes how people interact with computers.

SESSION PLAN:
 Conventional interfaces
 What is Surface Technology?
 Features
 Architecture
 Advantages and Disadvantages
 Conclusion
CONVENTIONAL INTERFACES:
 User interaction
Traditional point-and-click experience.
It’s impossible to scale and rotate an image
simultaneously.
 User experience
One user interacts with one application at a time.
It‘s impossible to manipulate two images at the same
time.
 User interface
Basic knowledge about the interface is necessary.
SURFACE TECHNOLOGY:
Surface computers are developed as a software and
hardware combination technology that allows a user, or
multiple users, to manipulate digital content by the use
of  gesture recognition.
Revolutionary multitouch computer with different look &
feel.
 Provides effortless interaction with digital content
through natural gestures, touch and physical objects
FEATURES:
Direct interaction : Users can
actually “grab” digital
information with their hands
and interact with content by
touch and gesture, without the
use of a mouse or keyboard.  Multi-touch contact :
Surface computing recognizes
many points of contact
simultaneously, not just from
one finger, as with a typical
touch screen, but up to dozens
and dozens of items at once.
Multi-user experience : Object recognition :

MAIN COMPONENTS:
Screen: A diffuser underneath the acrylic tabletop
processes multiple inputs from multiple users.
Objects can also be recognized by their shapes or
reading coded tags.

Infrared: Infrared light is projected onto the underside

of the diffuser. Objects or fingers are visible through
the diffuser by series of infrared-sensitive cameras
which are positioned underneath the surface of the
tabletop.
CPU: Surface uses many of the same components found in
everyday desktop computers — a Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB
of RAM and a 256MB graphics card. Wireless communication
with devices on the surface is handled using Wi-Fi and
Bluetooth antennas The underlying operating system is a
modified version of Microsoft Vista.

Projector: It uses the same DLP light engine found in many

rear projection HDTVs

American 110–120V power
Network Connectivity:
Wired Ethernet 10/100 and
wireless 802.11 b/g and
Bluetooth 2.0 connectivity.
Weight: 150 pounds
APPLICATIONS
To Transfer pictures from camera and cell phone to
surface
Play games and use the Internet
Watch television
Navigating through maps.
Used in casinos to place orders. Users can split the bill
and make the payment.
Used as billboard for advertising, shop for different
vintages of wine.
Provides a virtual ambience like live water ripples, fireflies
etc.
Provides a media player to play and enjoy music
ADVANTAGES
 Large surface area to view different applications.

 Data manipulation – selecting, moving, rotating and resizing.

 Quick and easy to use.

 Allows more than one user – several users can orient themselves on
different sides of surface to interact with an application simultaneously.

 Object recognition – increased functionality aiding user in speed and ease

of use.

 Time saving by eliminating many processes.

DISADVANTAGES
 Not portable and very expensive.
 Screen visibility – glare, fingerprints and human
interaction obscuring interface.
 Camera calibration requires high precision
 Security and privacy issues.
 Fatigue – reaching across the table often can cause the arms
to ache.
FUTURE:
CONCLUSION:
Microsoft Surface is the future of computers.

Fundamentally changes the way we interact with

technology.

Surface takes existing technology and presents it in a

new way. It isn't simply a touch screen, but more of a
touch-grab-move-slide-resize-and-place-objects-on-
top-of-screen, and this opens up new possibilities that
weren't there before.
