Constructivist Approach To Curriculum Development: Submitted To: Dr. Dayal Pyari NAME: MEGHNA SHARMA (A3410519080

The document discusses the constructivist approach to curriculum development. It outlines several key properties: constructivism believes that learners construct their own knowledge from experiences; learning occurs through collaborative experiences and reflecting on those experiences; and it fosters critical and creative thinking. Constructivist curricula encourage experimentation, research, field trips, films and class discussions. They emphasize learner-centered approaches and view the teacher as a facilitator. Problem-based and inquiry-based pedagogies are considered constructivist as they give students responsibility for their own learning and emphasize using critical thinking skills.

Properties of a Constructivist curriculum

 Constructivist believes that knowledge is constructed by the learner itself.

 Constructivist approaches emphasise on collaborative constructivism.

(Constructivism is basically a theory -- based on observation and scientific study
about how people learn).

 Learning is therefore done by students' “constructing” knowledge out of their experiences.

 It says that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world, through
experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences.

 Fosters critical and creative thinking .

Activities encouraged in constructivist classrooms include :-

Constructivist and curriculum
 It is the main feature of learner- centred curriculum.

 The constructivist approach encourages learners to seek solutions and from knowledge rather than to
repeat readymade solutions to problems.

 The constructivist believe that knowledge is created through the learner’s interaction with social and
physical environment.

 In Constructivist approach, unpredictable outcomes are highly valued.

 The teacher’s current understandings about the of the topic are the starting point of the curriculum
development. The main aim of a teacher is to act as a facilitator and create a conductive atmosphere .

 The trend towards constructivist and activity curricula are giving more responsibility for learners own learning.

 Problem based or inquiry based pedagogies are considered to be constructivist approach, emphasising students using
critical skills.
