Apparel Sewing Defects Guide

This document discusses various sewing defects that can occur in apparel manufacturing. It describes defects such as seam puckering, open seams, broken stitches, dropped stitches, loose threads, distorted knitting, seam slippage, and needle thread breakage. For each defect, it provides the causes and potential remedies. Common causes include improper thread tension, damaged machine parts, improper handling or cutting of materials, and improper timing of the sewing machine. Remedies focus on ensuring proper machine maintenance and settings, quality materials and thread, clear work instructions, and operator training.

SEWING DEFFECTS

Sewing Defects
• one of the most important factors of the apparel
manufacturing.
Different Types of Defects

• Seam Puckering
- The unwanted waviness
of the fabric along the
seam line is called seam
pucker or seam
puckering.

Causes:
 Uneven stretching on the
plies of fabric during sewing.
 Improper thread tensions.
Remedies:
 Thread guides should be checked periodically for
damages.
 Machine feed mechanism must be better quality.
 Tension, SPI and presser foot pressure should not be
Different Types of Defects

• Open seam or broken seam

- Portion of the garment that has not been covered by sewing thread.

Causes:
 Improper handling of the parts of garments.
 Improper setting and timing between needle
and looper or hook.

Remedies:
 Clear markings for stitch line.
 Proper setting and timing
between needle and looper or
hook.
 Tension should be quantifiable.
Different Types of Defects
• Broken Stitch (Non – continuous sewing thread)

Causes: Remedies:
 It appears due to  Needle plate,
improper timing or presser foot and
machine usage . feed dog should be
checked
periodically for
damages.
 Tension and
threading should not
be fiddled much.
 Proper timing.
Different Types of Defects
• Drop stitch/Skipped stitch

Dropping stitches is considered

a bad thing in knitting. When you
drop a stitch, you've made a
mistake, and a hole or a run is the
result. You can, however, use the
look of a dropped stitch on
purpose to make a fun design.

Causes:
 It appears due to improper handling of cut pieces or machine

Remedies:
 Placing of needle properly.
 Needle size & thread size must be adjusted.
 The pressure of pressure foot must be adjusted accurately.
Different Types of Defects

• Uncut / Loose Thread (Extra threads or loose

threads)
Causes:
 It appears due to
improper trimming
or finishing.
Remedies:
 Trimmer should be
used.
 Operator training.
 Garments finishing
should be checked
properly.
Different Types of Defects
• Distorted Knitting
- This defect is often caused by abrasion or excessive tension during winding or knitting, which
breaks a part of the yarn (e.g. a filament of a continuous-filament yarn or a ply of a two-fold yarn)
that is subsequently held back during knitting. It is well known that weft knitted fabrics tend to
undergo certain dimensional change that causes distortion in which there is a tendency of the
knitted loops to bend over, causing the wales to be at diagonal instead of perpendicular to the
courses.
Causes:
 These defects can be identified
by looking at the surface area;
they usually appear as irregular
on the fabric.
Remedies:
 Better inspection of fabric and cut
piece.
 Ensure that fabric and cut pieces
that are not up to standard are not
put into line and production is
wasted.
Different Types of Defects

• Seam Slippage
Causes:
 This happens when the yarns in the
fabric are pulled out on the seam
and are more frequent in fabrics
made from continuous filament
yarns.
Remedies:
 French seam type can be tired.
 Seam width can be increased.
Different Types of Defects

• Needle Thread Breakage

Causes:
 Thread gets trapped a the
thread guide.

Remedies:
 Use a foam pad or a similar
device to prevent the package
from tilting.
 Ensure that the re-threading is
done correctly.
 Ensure that the re-threading is
done correctly.
