Net-Zero Community Development Strategies

This document discusses redesigning an existing apartment building to enhance outdoor and indoor air quality according to current climatic conditions. It aims to study the apartment and compare original climatic data from 30 years ago to present data. The methodology involves analyzing the existing design, old/new climate data, indoor air quality, and comfort levels. Redesign strategies will focus on passive cooling and ventilation improvements to create better living conditions. Case studies demonstrate using natural strategies like ventilation and airshafts in Mediterranean climates to enhance indoor comfort in existing apartments.

TOPIC 1:

NET-ZERO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT FOR

LOW COST PEOPLE
AIM
• The aim of this research is assessing the net zero energy building requirements in Sub tropical
climatic zone.
• For achieving this goal, a comprehensive research of the relevant literature is done as well some
cases are employed for better illustration of the topic.
• The aim of this project is to develop a zero energy architecture for future development for low
cost people

OBJECTIVE

The main focus in this research is

• Designing Net zero community development with best input in design, material and technology
(Passive and Active design)
• To know briefly about NZEB (Net Zero Energy Buildings)
• To study the climatic data of Sub-tropical climate
• Suitable passive cooling strategy for Subtropical climate
• Multi-hazard disaster resilient housing
• Creating better living conditions at Floating House
• Analysis of different types of materials and structure for floating house
• Focusing on water management system
METHODOLOGY
Stage 1 - Study about Net-zero building
AIM – The aim of this research is to study in detail about NZEB and building’s energy
performance
METHOD - This study is concerned with the requirements of achieving net zero energy building
community for low cost people . It also discusses about net zero Site energy, Net zero source
energy, Net zero energy emissions, net zero energy cost and strategies to achieve NZEB

Stage 2 - Climatic Study :

AIM: To study in detail about the climatic data of Sub tropical region
METHOD: Main climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, monthly diurnal range, solar
radiation, sky cover, wind velocity, dry bulb temperature, psychometric chart, illumination range ,
sun shading, wind wheel will all be taken into account

Stage 3 - Suitable passive cooling strategy for a subtropical climate :

AIM : Passive cooling system has become an attractive option to design and modify homes to
achieve thermal comfort. The system provides cooling through the use of passive processes.
METHOD: Two main climatic factor such as the temperature and the relative humidity of city will
been taken into account in order to select the appropriate passive cooling strategy for a specific
location.
Stage 4 – Analysis on materials and their construction techniques
AIM : This paper describes the detailed analysis of materials and structures built using innovative
construction technology
METHOD : Comparative analysis of different martials are done to evolve the best suitable for net
zero building and further study on its construction techniques is done

Stage 5 - Multi-hazard disaster resilient housing

AIM: The aims is to systematically capture the hazard responses of vernacular architecture and
schematic prototype house is proposed which can withstand the effect of multiple hazards of the
area.
METHOD: These houses usually sit on the ground like any ordinary house, but when inundated
rises up to a predefined height and sinks back to its original position after the water recedes

Stage 6- Creating a Better Living Condition at the Floating House

AIM : This aim is to concluded that floating house with its form, function and the structure will
be able to adapt with environment and comfortably over water while floating house also provide
better accessibility to do daily activities
METHOD: The model moreover will be suitable to use for architectural approach and
ethnography in order to find the shifting settlement arrangement over water so that the research
outputs would possibly relate settling behavior over water to settlement and space arrangements
of floating house

CASE STUDY
Indira Paryavaran Bhavan
Location – New Delhi
Occupancy type – Office
Climate type – Composite

• Indira Paryavaran Bhawan, the new office building for Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) sets is
a radical change from a conventional building design.
• The project team put special emphasis on strategies for reducing  energy demand by providing adequate
natural light, shading,  landscape to reduce ambient temperature, and energy efficient active building
systems.
• Several energy conservation measures were adopted to reduce the energy loads of the building and the
remaining demand was met by producing energy from on-site installed high efficiency solar panels to
achieve net zero criteria.
• Indira Paryavaran Bhawan uses 70% less energy compared a conventional building. T
• he project adopted green building concepts including conservation and optimization of water by recycling
waste water from the site.
• Indira Paryavaran Bhawan is now India’s highest green rated building.
• The project has received GRIHA 5 Star and LEED Platinum.
• The building has already won awards such as the Adarsh/GRIHA of MNRE for exemplary demonstration of
Integration of Renewable Energy Technologies.
TOPIC 2:
ENHANCING OUTDOOR AND INDOOR AIR QUALITY FOR
EXISTING APARTMENT
AIM
The aim of this project is to study an existing apartment that exists 30 years before and to redesign
it according to its present climatic conditions.

OBJECTIVE

Due to global warming and climate change, apartments that are designed 30 years ago have lost
its purpose. So this project is to redesign such apartment according to present climatic conditions.
This focus in this research is
• To compare the climatic changes happened in the years gap
• Disadvantages of the apartment design to its present climatic condition
• To study the present climatic data
• To find out its Outdoor & Indoor Air quality
• To find out the on human comfort levels for the present climatic conditions
• To enhance ventilation
• To improve comfort levels, ventilation & air quality
• Suitable passive cooling strategy
METHODOLOGY

Stage 1 – To Study of the existing apartment

AIM – The aim of this research is to study in detail about existing apartment METHOD - This
research is concerned with a detail study of existing apartment in terms of planning, the strategies
they used, design elements and its purposes

Stage 2 - Climatic Study and current environmental status of the Apartment:

AIM: To study in detail about the climatic data at the apartment for which it was designed
METHOD: To find the old climatic data such as temperature, humidity, lux level, wind flow for
which is the apartment is designed

Stage 3 – Study of present climatic conditions:

AIM : To study about the present climatic data of the location
METHOD: Main climatic factors such as temperature, humidity, monthly diurnal range, solar
radiation, sky cover, wind velocity, dry bulb temperature, psychometric chart, illumination range ,
sun shading, wind wheel will all be taken into account
Stage 4 – Comparison between the two climatic data
AIM : This paper describes the comparison between the old and resent climatic data
METHOD : Comparative analysis of old and present climate is done to know the rising climatic
change happening and to find the disadvantages of the existing apartment

Stage 5- Creating a Better Living Condition by redesigning the Apartment

AIM : This aim is to redesign the existing apartment as per current climatic conditions and issues
METHOD: The proposal of redesign of existing apartment is done as per the current
environmental conditions using passive and active strategies to create a better living and
comfortable environment for the people in a much sustainable way
