groups, which differ from each other in respect of the
knowledge shared by their members and in respect of

Intercultural Communication (Examples)
• Coca-Cola Company once tried to find a phonetic equivalent of their brand to be used in
China and thought of using KeKou-KeLa. But the translation of those words would be “bite
the wax tadpole” or “female horse stuffed with wax”. So it’s totally change the meaning.

• “Thumbs up” sign is taken as a symbol to say okay in most cultures but it has offending
meanings in Iran, Latin America, and some other cultures.

• Eating with hands is considered to be an accepted way to eat in Bangladeshi culture but it
taken as a manner-less in many other cultures.

• In America people shake hands or even hug each other as greeting but Muslim cultures like
Bangladesh prefer Salam as a greeting along with handshakes or hugs. In India people join
their hands to say namaskar.
Importance of
Intercultural Business
• It offers the ability to deal across cultures, which is increasingly
important, as the world gets smaller.
• Helps to deal with cultural difference peacefully
• Lacking in intercultural communication can lead to the insult of
the culture and people involved.
• People interpret messages based on their culture, so it’s important
to know about the cultural differences for proper communication.
• Intercultural differences also cause lack of trust between people as
the meaning of trust itself can be different.

 Chinese people appreciate a conservative dress code. Avoid
physical contact while conversing
 Japanese people of similar positions sit across from each other,
juniors should never sit across from senior employees
 Germany :No jokes during business meetings. Allow the
oldest person to enter the room first.
 France: Fashion and appearance are much more important in
France than in most other countries in the world
