Duke, The Java Mascot

Duke was invented as a cartoon character to represent Java. Though meant to be left-handed, it's unclear if Duke is meant to be an inebriated penguin or sycophantic metronome. Gosling worked at Sun Microsystems from 1984 to 2009 before it was acquired by Oracle, and only stayed at Oracle from 2009 to 2010 due to issues like micromanagement and lack of autonomy over Java projects.

Duke, The Java Mascot

 Duke was invented and first drawn

by Joe Palrang and has become the
icon for Java.

 Thus another major byproduct of

the Green project was a little cartoon
character named "Duke".

 Note that Duke is supposed to be

officially left handed !!

 What confuses me most about Duke

is whether he is an inebriated penguin
or a sycophantic metronome!!!
Dissolving of the Sun
Between 1984 and 2010, Gosling
was with Sun Microsystems.

James Gosling stayed with Sun

Microsystems from 1984 to 2009, a
vast tenure spanning 26 years.

Despite the roaring success of Sun

Java, Sun fell prey to financial
disasters.

Oracle took over Sun in an

attempt to accentuate its foothold
in the software realm in 2009 and
Sun Java was renamed to Oracle
Java.
Gosling’s Exit From Oracle
 Gosling worked from 2009 to early 2010 (April 2,2010) at Oracle before quitting in the hindsight of a
few cited reasons.

 Gosling's creation of Java is a feat that many would assume demands a modicum of respect. Instead,
Gosling says all he got was the opposite from Oracle.

 His reasons include “An organization which was low-balling key employees and cutting off at the knees projects and
strategies Sun had put into play.”

 "My ability to decide anything at Oracle was minimized," Gosling said. "Oracle is an extremely micromanaged company.
So myself and my peers in the Java area were not allowed to decide anything. All of our authority to decide anything
evaporated.“

 Gosling says the final straw came when he realized that "My job seemed to be to get up on stage and be a public
presence for Java for Oracle. I'm from the wrong Myers-Briggs quadrant for that," he said.
