1 IIM-A zMaster Planning, Ahmedabad 2014
IIM Ahmedabad has a world-class reputation as a
management institute, and also a fine history of
architectural patronage.
The Institute must evolve over time, to retain its status as a
premier learning environment.
New developments are essential to this growth.
Working closely with the
Institute, we have developed
a Master Plan strategy that
is flexible.
z
It allows for sensitive and appropriate change, to
accommodate the Institute’s growing needs, while holistically
protecting, enhancing and integrating the two unique assets
of the existing campus:
i. The iconic buildings
by Kahn, Raje and
others
ii. The network of
mature green spaces
in between and
around the buildings.
Site Area: 103 Acres
The design development
The proposed new development includes much needed additional learning
spaces, zstudent dormitories, faculty and staff housing, sports facilities and
an auditorium. As Master Architect, they had proposed a series of design
and planning guidelines to ensure that all new development is suitably
located, of an appropriate scale and of the highest architectural quality.
New
developments
must be efficient
and economical
in their land use,
be sympathetic in
form and material
to the existing
iconic buildings,
and respect the
grain and
underlying order
of the existing
campus.
Subsequent phasing massing
The master
z plan had been planned in a phased manner, to
accommodate the future needs as envisaged by the institute
today, but t hephasing also remains flexible, anticipating
changing in future requirements.
We have also
supported the
institute facilitate
the conservation
work for the
heritage buildings
by identifying
spaces within the
campus for
temporary
relocation.

4 Chennai Container Terminal, Chennai 2002 -2004
z
HCP partnered with Babtie
Consultants India Pvt. Ltd. to design
z
the New Management Center for
the Chennai Container Terminal, run
by P&P Ports India Ltd. The building
is situated at the southern end of
the 1000-metre-long Container
Terminal. The simple, rectangular,
five-storeyed Management Center
is oriented to minimize heat gain.
ELEVATION
In view of the administrative
requirement
z of ‘a constant view
of the terminal as well as the
berthing ships’, and taking
advantage of the natural light,
the work areas were placed on
the north side of the building.
The administrative staff was
provided with views of the
entire terminal through the fully
glazed north facade. Utility
areas like toilets, AHU,
staircase and lift, pantry,
archives and utility ducts
were placed on the south
side of the building, in view
of the harsh glare – the direct
sunlight of Chennai.
Site Plan 1. Entry 2. Security Cabin 3. Visitor Parking 4. Employee Parking 5.
Admin Block 6. Canteen & Amenities 7. Garden 8. Main Exit for Transporter 9.
Truck Parking 10. Container Yard 11. Space for loading/unloading
z
Built-up Area: 2,500 Sq.m.
SECTION
z
The strategic location
of the Management
Center ensured
prominent visibility of
its south facade from a
distance of almost
1000 metres. This,
combined with the
climatic requirement of
minimal openings,
allowed the client and
the architect to
conceptualize the use
of the blank and high
building facade, for a
large striking mural.
