MURASAKI SHIKIBU

 Murasaki Shikibu, (born 978, Kyōto, Japan—


died 1014, Kyōto), Japanese writer and lady-
in-waiting who was the author of the Genji
monogatari(1010 BC; The Tale of Genji),
generally considered the greatest work of
Japanese literature and thought to be the
world's oldest full novel.
 She was a Japanese novelist, poet and lady-in-waiting at the
Imperial court during the Heian period.

 She is best known as the author of The Tale of Genji, widely


considered to be the world's first novel, written in Japanese between
about 1000 and 1012. Murasaki Shikibu is a descriptive name; her
personal name is unknown, but she may have been Fujiwara no
Kaoruko , who was mentioned in a 1007 court diary as an imperial
lady-in-waiting
Who is GENJI?

Prince Genji or The Shining One was the son of the


Emperor and his favorite concubine. Because Genji
has no power at court his
“ brother” is air to the thrown not him.
From the brief of chapter 1 and the beginning of chapter 2, the reader
claim that Genji is a remarkable boy.

 He attracted the attention of his father, the emperor, who would have
liked to have made him emperor.

 Despite his reduction to commoner status, he is married off to the


daughter of an important minister, suggesting his own lofty status.

 He has been nicknamed “ THE SHINING GENJI”


PLOT……
The Tale of Genji, tells the story of Prince Genji. The
novel carefully twists through his depressing and
often tragic love affairs. When Genji die the tale
switches focus to his son.

All the while the novel carries a soft, melancholy and


psychological tone that emphasizes the passage of
time.
