Machine Loading & Unloading Robots

The document discusses machine loading and unloading using industrial robots. It defines robots and their applications in material handling, assembly, inspection and more. Robots can replace humans for hazardous, repetitive or precision tasks. The document discusses material handling robots and considerations for machine loading/unloading like part positioning and gripper design. It provides examples of robots performing machine loading only, unloading only, and both loading and unloading. Overall robots improve production speeds while protecting workers from injury with their accuracy and dexterity.

 Material Handling Robot
• Material Handling makes use of the robot’s
simple capability to transport objects.
• By fitting the robot with an appropriate end of
the arm tool (e.g gripper), the robot can
efficiently and accurately move product from
one location to another.
General Considerations
• If a robot has to transfer a part or to load a machine then the
following points are to be considered.
1. Part Positioning and Orientation
2. Gripper Design
3. Minimum Distances moved
4. Robot work volume
5. Accuracy and repeatability
6. Robot Cofiguration
 Machine Loading and
Unloading
• In machine loading and unloading process, a robot will be used to
move the work parts to or from the production machine.

• The Machine loading and unloading application includes the

following three process:
 Machine Loading
 Machine Unloading
 Machine Loading and Unloading
 Machine Loading
• In this operation, the robot loads raw work parts in the machine, and some other
systems are used to unload the finished work parts from the machine

• Example:
• In a press working process, a robot is used to load the sheet metal in the press, and
the finished work part are removed from the press with the help of gravity.
 Machine Unloading
• In machine unloading, the finished work parts are unloaded from the
machine by a robot, while the loading of raw materials are done without
any robot support.
• Example:
• Plastic modelling and die casting
 Machine Loading and Unloading
• In this process, a robot perform both loading and unloading of
work parts in and from the machine.

• Example:
• Machining Operation.
 Advantages:
• Machine Loading robots not only increase production speeds, it
also protects worker from injury
• They are extremely accurate and also have the dexterity to
handle the part with care.
