Pelvic Tilting and Muscle Function

1. The pelvis connects the spine to the lower extremities and its motion causes movement at the hip and lumbar spine joints. 2. Different muscles cause different pelvic motions - hip flexors cause anterior pelvic tilt, hip extensors cause posterior pelvic tilt, and rotators cause pelvic rotation. 3. Stabilizing muscles like the abdominals, erector spinae, and hip muscles help control excessive pelvic motion when moving the femur at the hip.

Pelvic motion and muscle function
• Pelvis is connection
link between spine
lower extremity
• Movement of pelvis
cause motion at hip
and lumber spine
articulations
• Hip musculature cause
pelvic motion through
reverse action
Pelvic motion and muscle function
• Hip flex cause an ant pelvic
tilt
• Hip ext post pelv tilt
• Abductors and adductors lat
pelvic tilt
• Rotators cause pelvic rotation

• To prevent excessive pelvic

motion when moving femur
at hip
• Pelvis must stabilized by
abdominals , errector spine,
multifidus, and quadratus
lumborm
Anterior pelvic tilt
• ant sup illiac
spine of pelvis
move ant and inf
• Closer to ant asp
of femur as
pelvis rot
forward around
transverse axis of
hip jts
• Result in hip flex
and inc lumber
spine extension
Anterior pelvic tilt
• Muscle causing this
are hip flexors and
back extensors
• During standing line
of gravity trunk falls
ant to axis of hip jt
effect is an ant pelvic
tilt movt
• Stability provided by
abdominal muscle
and hip ext muscle.
Post pelvic tilt
• Post sup illc
spine of
pelvis move
post and inf
• Thus closer
post aspect
of femur
• As pelvic
rotate back
ward around
axis of hip
• Result in hip
ext n lumber
spine flexion
Post pelvic tilt
• Muscle causing this
motion r
• Hip extensors n
trunk flex
• During standing
when line of gravity
of trunk fall post to
axis of hip jt
• Effect post pl tilt
• Dynamic stability
provided by
• Hip flex n back
