HISTORICAL PROFILE
• According to Father Cayetano Sanchez, OFM, who made researches on Bicol
History at the Franciscan Archives in Pastrana, Spain, in Year 1569, the name
Camalig originated when a Spanish garrison led by Captain Luis Enriquez de
Guzman, accidentally came to Bicol Region on a scouting activity of the
neighboring island in search of food supplies needed badly by Legazpi’s soldiers
stationed in Panay.
• From Sorsogon, Captain De Guzman ventured northward inland searching as far
as Camalig where they chanced upon a thriving and prosperous agricultural
settlement or Rancheria, whose inhabitants kept their farm products in little huts
with grass roof but without wall called camarin in Spanish or “KAMALIG” in
local dialect. After a brief rest, Captain De Guzman and his men went back to
Panay. The place then became known as Camalig from the native huts used for
storing harvest or crops.

TOPOGRAPHY
• The Municipality of Camalig is approximately 2, 500 feet above sea level and its topography
is somewhat mountainous with scattered plains and valleys. The political boundary of the
municipality actually begins from the volcano center towards the Municipality of Jovellar. At
the base of Mayon Volcano, where the plains begin, are rolling hills and irregular ranges
punctuated by streams and rivers. From the northern boundary, the terrain of Camalig slides
down the Volcano slope gradually flattening into the plains of the Poblacion area until it
reaches the rolling hills and mountains along the southern base of a triangle at the volcano
base. Aside from rivers running through the Poblacion, there are no other bodies of water,
which has significant size existing in the municipality.
