ASSESSING AFFECTIVE
LEARNING OUTCOMES
REPORTED BY: MARY JOY TRINIDAD
INTRODUCTION
Assessment of Learning
- it is the ways of constructing instructional objectives
and how to assess cognitive domain are discussed.
What are the Cognitive Domains?
COGNITIVE DOMAIN
It calls for outcomes of mental activity such as
Memorizing Synthesizing
Reading Drawing conclusions
Problem Solving
Analyzing
AFFECTIVE TRAITS AND LEARNING OUTCOMES
Hohn 1995
- The term affective refers to a wide variety to traits and
dispositions that are different from knowledge, reasoning, and
skills.
Davis 2007
- it refers as motivation, dispositions, beliefs, and attitudes
AFFECTIVE DOMAIN OF THE TAXONOMY OF
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
Affective Domain
- it describes learning objectives that emphasize a feeling, tone,
emotion, or degree of acceptance or rejection.
LEVELS OF AFFECTIVE DOMAIN
1. Receiving ( Attention)
2. Responding ( Interest)
3. Valuing ( Preference/ Appreciation)
4. Organization ( Philosophy of life)
5. Characterization by a Value ( Lifestyle)
RECEIVING ( ATTENTION)
It is concerned with greeting, holding, and
directing student’s attention.
Attention concerns the student’s willingness to
attend to a classroom activity and being directed
by the teacher.
Students attention is illustrated when listening
attentively to the discussion of the teacher, participating
to all classroom activities, and being aware of the
importance of learning and classroom proceedings.
RESPONDING ( INTEREST)
It is concerned with the active participation of the
learners by showing interest on what they are doing.
This can be assessed through observation in terms of
FSRN.
It can be shown by completing the assigned work,
active participation of students in class discussion,
volunteering task, and willingness to answer questions.
VALUING ( PREFERENCE/ APPRECIATION)
It refers to the willingness to be perceived by the others
as valuing certain ideas, materials, phenomenon, or
behavior.
It also be shown on the general reaction to a series of
questions that the teachers gets from the students.
This can be assessed using the Likert scale such as-
SA, A, U, D, SD.
ORGANIZATION ( PHILOSOPHY OF LIFE)
It is concerned with the development or philosophy of
life by bringing out the values of the students together
to form a value system that will determine relationships
among values and resolve- conflicts.
Philosophy of life
- shown by accepting responsibility for his behavior,
understanding and accepting own strengths and
weaknesses, and formulating a life plan in harmony with
his abilities, interests, and beliefs.
CHARACTERIZATION BY A VALUE ( LIFESTYLE)
It is concerned with how the students act consistently
with values internalized.
Lifestyle- can be illustrated by demonstrating self-
reliance in working independently, cooperating in group
activities, punctuality and self- discipline, and
demonstrating a lifestyle by consistency of his daily
actions.
AFFECTIVE LEARNING OUTCOMES
3 Methods of assessing learning outcomes
Teacher observation
students self- reports
peer rating
3 CONSIDERATION WHEN ASSESSING AFFECT
According to Mcmillan 2001
1. Emotions and feelings
2. Use several approaches
3. Result
EMOTIONS AND FEELINGS
It is not stable of young children and during early adolescence
because most of them are unpredictable.
To obtain a valid and desirable student’s emotion or feeling, the
teacher is suggested to conduct different assessments over
considerable amount of time.
USE SEVERAL APPROACHES
It is advisable as much as possible.
Do not rely on a single approach because it has a limitation.
THE RESULT
What will you use to assess your own students to find the result
of their exams, reporting's, and etc.?
Individual or group result
TEACHER OBSERVATION
It is to make a systematic record on the observation about
the presence or absence of affective outcomes.
STEPS IN USING TEACHER’S OBSERVATION
• Determine in advance the specific behavior related to
the targets.
• Develop a list of positive and negative behaviors.
• Decide the type of observation you want to use.
TWO METHODS IN USING TEACHER OBSERVATION
1. Unstructured observation
2. Structured observation
UNSTRUCTURED OBSERVATION
- know as open-ended observation
FS
Recording observation
Note Taking
Diary
STRUCTURED OBSERVATION
- It involves the utilization of checklist, rating scale, and
sometimes rubrics.
yes or no
present or absent
always, often, sometimes, seldom, and never
STUDENT SELF- REPORT
It allows student to express their feelings or attitudes toward a given specific
classroom activity.
interview method
questionnaire
survey methods
LET’S DO AN ACTIVITY…..
Complete the statement.
1. What I like most about my friend is_____________________________
2. Mathematics is____________________________________________
3. When I have enough money I like to____________________________
4. I am happy when___________________________________________
5. I want to sit beside him because________________________________
CONSTRUCTED-RESPONSE FORMAT
It is done using a completion item or an essay
item.
The teacher ask the students about their feelings
to respond to a simple statement by writing a
word or phrase to complete the said statement.
SELECTED RESPONSE FORMAT
Rating Scale - using likert-scale or numbers from 5,4,3, and so on.
Semantic Differential Scale - the students check between each
pair of adjectives that describes the positive or negative aspects of a given
traits.
Checklist
Peer Rating
LONG QUIZ….
1. Give at least 2 types of Cognitive Domain
2. Give the 2 methods in using teacher observation
