Building Blocks - Property Classes (I)

 Cars are built from a generic set of parts or components

 Engines
 Transmissions
 Wheels
 These components may also be used in other types of products
 Vans, trucks, boats and aeroplanes all have engines

 Whilst these other products may have different types of engines all the
engines have common ATTRIBUTES
 Fuel type, Power output, Torque etc
 They also do common things - ACTIONS
 Start, Stop, Breakdown

 Therefore we can create a common definition for all types of engine

which would include all the attributes we need to describe any engine
and all actions that an engine can perform

In AA we refer to this definition as a PROPERTY CLASS

Slide 15
Building Blocks - Property Classes (II)

Examples of Property Classes

Vehicles Banking Products

 Engines  Term Amount
 Transmission  Interest
 Wheels  Payment Schedule
 Bodies  Charges

Slide 16
Building Blocks - Properties

 Cars have more than one wheel

 The front and rear wheels are frequently different sizes
 We need the ability to specify 2 types of wheel to build such a car
 However both sets of wheels have the same attributes
Radius, width, tyre type etc

 Therefore we need to be able to define different types of component

which are of the same class in order to define our product
 In the case of our car we need front and rear wheels
 In some cars (hybrids) we would need to have two engines

In AA we can create named types (copies) of a Property

Class which are known as PROPERTIES

Users can create new Properties

New Property Classes can only be created by TEMENOS

Slide 17
Building Blocks – Properties vs Property Classes

 Properties have the same attributes as their Property Class (no more
and no less)
 They allow us to create two or more types of the same thing
 they have the same attributes and can do the same activities
 but for the purposes of product design we need to differentiate between
them
 For example

Cars Loans
Property Class Property Property Class Property
Wheels Front Wheels Interest Principal Interest
Rear Wheels Penalty Interest

It is PROPERTIES rather than PROPERTY CLASSES that

are used to define products

Slide 18
Building Blocks – Product Lines, Property Classes and Properties

 Different high level product classifications are created by different

combinations of Property Classes (and by inference different
Properties)
 A car has an engine, transmission, wheels and a body
 A truck has an engine, transmission, wheels, body (cab) and a load bay
 Whilst they share many Property Classes the truck has one extra which
is the load bay
 It has to have a load bay otherwise it isn’t a truck
 It is fundamentally different to a car in its design and intended use
 An aircraft would need another Property Class to describe its wings

In AA product classifications that are made up of differing

Property Classes are known as PRODUCT LINES

 Examples of different Product Lines in the Banking Industry would be

 Loans
 Deposits
 Current Accounts

Slide 19
Building Blocks – Product Lines and Product Groups

 Product Lines can be subdivided into PRODUCT GROUPS

 All Products belong to a Product Group

 Each Product Group has a number of Properties associated with it.

 Each Product Group must have one Property for each of the mandatory
Property Classes of its Product Line
 Different Product Groups can have different Properties and different
numbers of Properties (always observing the mandatory Property
Class rule)

Users can create new Product Groups

New Product Lines can only be created by TEMENOS

Slide 20
Defining Products

 Products belong to a Product Group which in turn belongs to a Product

Line
 Each Product Group has a number of Properties associated with it
 Each Property is of a particular Property Class which defines its
attributes

 Within a Product Line some Property Classes will be mandatory and

others will be optional
 All products defined under a Product Line must have at least one
Property for each mandatory Property Class
 A Product Group can have more than one Property for each Property
Class

At the Product level we create PRODUCT CONDITIONS to define

instances of the Properties for the Product Group with assigned
values for the ATTRIBUTES of the associated Property Class

Product Conditions

Each Property must have a Product Condition

assigned to it.

What do Product Conditions do?

Product Conditions define default values for

Arrangements, whether these defaults can be
modified at the arrangement level and if so with
what restrictions.

Slide 38
Product Conditions - Recap

 Product Conditions represent the parts that are available to build our car (Product).

 These parts are organised by Product Class – we can think of a Product Class as a “parts
bin” and the Product Conditions as the various parts in the bin

 Parts from the “parts bin” can be used for more than one Property (provided they are of the
same Property Class) in a given Product ie Front Wheels and Back Wheels

 If we cannot find a part with the correct Attributes we can create another and add it to the
“parts bin”

Slide 39
Negotiation Rules

Negotiation Rules: Specify if and how each attribute in

an arrangement may be modified by
the user.

Examples Choice of exterior colour, interior trim and wheels

is restricted based on the product derivative ie
ES, SE, M-Sport.

Other items are non negotiable – for example

when selecting an engine customer cannot
change the number of cylinders of power output.

In the case of financial products we can use this

to restrict changes that a user can make to the
standard terms of a loan is can the negotiate the
interest rate on a loan and if so by how much.
Slide 40
Negotiation Rules - example

The exterior colour is restricted to one of the

following:
Indianapolis Red
Interlagos Blue

Designing, Proofing and Publishing

 Building a Product in AA is a three stage process

 Designing
 Proofing
 Publish

 In the design phase only the designer can see the changes that are
being made – their actions have no effect on the live products
 In order to make the new product available to the operational staff it
needs to be Published into the Product Catalog.
 To check that there are no errors in the design (particularly where
hierarchies are involved) the designer must first Proof the new product.
