FAMILY
Habibie is the fourth of eight children, Alwi Abdul Jalil Habibie
and R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo. His father who worked as an
agricultural expert came from Gorontalo ethnic group and had Bugis
ancestry, while his mother was Javanese. R.A. Tuti Marini Puspowardojo
was the son of an ophthalmologist in Yogya, and his father,
Puspowardjojo, served as the school owner.
EDUCATION
He had knowledge in SMAK Dago. He studied mechanical engineering at
the Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia Bandung (now the Bandung
Institute of Technology) in 1954. In 1955-1965 he continued aviation engineering
studies, specialized in aircraft construction, at RWTH Aachen, West Germany,
received an ingenieur diploma in 1960 and a degree ingenieur doctorate in 1965
with the title of summa cum laude.
ACHIEVEMENT
Habibie worked at Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm, an airline based in Hamburg,
Germany, reaching the peak of his career as a vice president of technology. In 1973, he
returned to Indonesia at the request of former president Suharto.
He then served as the State Minister of Research and Technology from 1978 to
March 1998. Before serving as President (May 21, 1998 - October 20, 1999), B.J.
Habibie was the Vice President (March 14, 1998 - May 21, 1998) in the VII
Development Cabinet under President Soeharto. He was appointed as chairman of the
ICMI (Association of Indonesian Muslim Scholars), during his tenure as minister.
childhood
He spent his childhood in Pare-pare. He is known as a child who is firm
and firm in adhering to principles. His penchant in childhood was riding horses
and reading books. His intelligence has been seen since childhood.
In his biography entitled Rudy, The Visionary Story of Youth, Habibie tells
that his family is a religious family. In fact, his father used to recite the holy verses
of the Koran to little Habibie.
Habibie revealed, the holy verses of the Qur'an read by his father could
calm him down. No wonder his father often reads the Koran from one to two juz,
just to calm him down. He also admitted that the habit of listening to the Koran
since childhood had a very positive impact. The proof, at the age of three,
Habibie was able to read the holy verses of the Koran smoothly.
