Global Warming Final

The document summarizes global warming, explaining that it occurs when greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide trap heat from the sun in the atmosphere, increasing temperatures. It lists effects like stronger hurricanes and droughts. Causes are outlined as the burning of fossil fuels and methane from agriculture and landfills. Solutions proposed include conservation, renewable energy, and individual actions like using energy efficient light bulbs and driving less.

GLOBAL WARMING

BASICS
Global Warming

Presented By: Rashmi Solanki

What is global warming?

The changes in the surface air

temperature, referred to as the
global temperature, brought about
by the enhanced greenhouse effect,
which is induced by emissions of
greenhouse gases into the air.
Global warming is when the earth heats
up.

It happens when greenhouse gases such as

carbon dioxide ,water vapor ,nitrous oxide
and methane
trap heat and light from the sun in the earth’s
atmosphere, which increases the temperature.
How Global Warming Works

Carbon Dioxide (CO2)

Fossil fuels (coal, oil, natural gas)

Greenhouse Effect
The Sun’s energy passes through the
car’s windshield.

This energy (heat) is trapped inside the car

and cannot pass back through the windshield
causing the inside of the car to warm up.
Effects of Global Warming
1. Spread of disease

As northern countries
warm, disease carrying
insects migrate north,
bringing plague and
disease with them.
2. Warmer waters and more
hurricanes
As the
temperature of
oceans rise, so
will the
probability of
more frequent
and stronger
hurricanes.
3. Increased probability and intensity
of droughts and heat waves
4. Economic Consequences

Hurricanes and
diseases cost
money which
affect a
country’s
economy
5. Polar ice caps melting

• Raise sea levels.

• Raise
temperatures
• Affect Wildlife
6. Wildlife Effects
• Polar Bears
– Require pack ice to live
– Might eventually go extinct in the wild
• Sea turtles
– Breed on the same islands as
their birth
– Could go extinct on some islands
as beaches are flooded
• Other species may go extinct as rainfall patterns
change throughout the world
What’s the proof that
global warming is taking
place?
Portage Glacier
• Alaska

1914 2004
Colorado River
• Arizona

June 2002 Dec 2003

Drought in Africa
Lake Faguibine Lake Chad
Global Warming graph
Why is global warming
happening?
Rapid CO2 Increases
Burning of Fossil Fuels in plants,
factories, cars and houses
Methane from rice paddies both ends of
animals, garbage in landfills and mining
operations
Nitrous oxide from fertilizers and
other chemicals
Together we can make a big change!
Possible Solutions to
Global Warming
Mitigation of Global Warming
• Conservation
– Reduce energy needs
– Recycling
• Alternate energy sources
– Nuclear
– Wind
– Geothermal
– Hydroelectric
– Solar
– Fusion
What’s being done now to
reduce our emissions?

Fuel-Efficiency
Solar Power
Wind Power
What can you do to help
solve the problem?
Simple Things To Do

Turn off your computer or the TV

when you’re not using it.

Take shorter showers. Heating water uses energy.

Keep rooms cool by closing the blinds, shades, or

curtains.

Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

Use compact fluorescent bulbs.

•Plant a tree •Reduce, Reuse,
Recycle
Be Bulb Smart—Use CFLs
What’s the Compact
Incandescent difference? Fluorescent

500 lbs. of
coal

•1,430 lbs. CO2 pollution avoided

•$30 saved
Simple Things To Do
Dress lightly when it’s hot instead of turning up
the air conditioning. Or use a fan.
Dress warmly when it’s cold instead of turning
up the heat.

Offer to help your parents keep the air filters on

your AC and furnace clean.

Walk short distances instead of asking for a

ride in the car.

Plant a tree. Recycle.

Lets make our world a better place !

The time to act is now !
