VOLLEYBALL
VOLLEYBALL
• Volleyball is a team sport in which two teams of six players are separated
by a net. Each team tries to score points by grounding a ball on the other
team's court under organized rules.
• The complete rules are extensive, but simply, play proceeds as follows:
A player on one of the teams begins a 'rally' by serving the ball (tossing or
releasing it and then hitting it with a hand or arm), from behind the back
boundary line of the court, over the net, and into the receiving team's court.
The receiving team must not let the ball be grounded within their court. The
team may touch the ball up to 3 times but individual players may not touch
the ball twice consecutively. Typically, the first two touches are used to set
up for an attack, an attempt to direct the ball back over the net in such a way
that the serving team is unable to prevent it from being grounded in their
court.
• The rally continues, with each team allowed as many as three consecutive
touches, until either (1): a team makes a kill, grounding the ball on the
opponent's court and winning the rally; or (2): a team commits a fault and
loses the rally. The team that wins the rally is awarded a point, and serves the
ball to start the next rally.
• A few of the most common faults include:
1. causing the ball to touch the ground or floor outside the opponents' court or
without first passing over the net;
2.catching and throwing the ball;
3.double hit: two consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same player;
4.four consecutive contacts with the ball made by the same team;
5.net foul: touching the net during play;
6.foot fault: the foot crosses over the boundary line when serving.
IS MATHEMATICS RELATED TO VOLLEYBALL ?
• Mathematics and volleyball are good friends.
• Mathematics is related to volleyball in many aspects like the no. of
players are equal in both teams representing symmetry , the net is
parallel to the ground and perpendicular to the side line, etc.
• Following are some of the aspects that we can relate to very well :
• Use of probability in volleyball.
• Use of Pythagorean theorem in volleyball.
• Use of quadratic equations in volleyball.
PROBABILITY IN VOLLEYBALL.
• Probability is a type of ratio where we compare how many times an
outcome can occur compared to all possible outcomes.E.g. What is
the probability to get a 6 when you roll a die?
• In volleyball , probability is used to determine which team will get the
next point or which team will win the match. The probability of a
team winning a match is ½ and the probability of getting a point is
also ½.
PYTHAGOREAN THEOREM IN VOLLEYBALL
• In mathematics, the Pythagorean theorem, also known as Pythagoras's
theorem, is a fundamental relation in Euclidean geometry among the three
sides of a right triangle. It states that the square of the hypotenuse (the side
opposite the right angle) is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two
sides.
• The serve of volleyball can be calculated using the Pythagorean theorem. E.g.
A volleyball court has a width of 9m and length of 18m.
• C2 = A2+ B2
C2=(18)2 + (9)2
C2=324 + 81
C = 20.12m
Therefore, the serve would be close to 20.12m long.
QUADRATIC EQUATIONS IN VOLLEYBALL
• In algebra , a quadratic equation is any equation having the form ax 2+ bx +c ,
where x represents an unknown and a,b and c represent known numbers
such that a is not equal to 0.
• Quadratic equations are used to solve problems involving the parabolic
shapes since the path followed by a volleyball is in the shape of a parabola.
CONCLUSION
• So here , from this power point presentation , we can say that
volleyball and mathematics are good friends and inter related.
• Other than the aspects explained in the presentation there are many
more aspects in which mathematics is related to volleyball.
