HYDROFINISHING
Hydrofinishing is the final step in the production of lubricating oil basestocks.
The main aim:
to improve the physical & chemical properties of the product
to produce a higher quality premium product compared to the low quality dewaxed oil (DWO)
product becomes more stable and has better colour suitable to be used as motor based oils.
Process Steps:
1. Dewaxed oil (DWO) is hydrotreated in a series of Reactors
2. Fractionation to separate the different neutral base oils.
3. Base oils blended with additives to obtain products with desired
properties.
Reaction:
. Hydrodesulphurization (HDS), mild hydrodenitrogenation (HDN)
mild aromatic hydrogenation reactions
. Nickel and molybdenum oxides impregnated with high purity alumina extrudes is used as the
catalyst to remove Sulphur, Oxygen & Nitrogen
. Partial pressures of hydrogen is increased, to increase the reaction rate
. This can avoid polymerization & reduces coke formation.
