PLC Automation

This document provides an overview of programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and automation. It discusses the history and evolution of PLCs from relay-based control systems. The key components and basic operation cycle of a PLC are described. PLC programming using ladder logic is also covered. The document lists several advantages of PLCs over hard-wired relay-based systems and some applications of PLC automation in various industries.

Referance
What is automation?
Basically delegation of human control function
to the technical equipment for:
1. Increasing productivity
2. Increasing quality
3. Reducing cost
4. Inceasing safety in working condition
TYPES OF AUTOMATION
HOME AUTOMATION INDUSTRIAL AUTOMATION

PLC

AC DRIVES
PLC is a Controller which was Invented to Replace
the Sequential Relay Ckt.
What is a PLC?
Why to use PLC'S?
It can be Programmed According to the Process.
Previously Relay Based Automation was Available
but i.e. not Desirable.
History

Early control system consisted of huge control board
consisting of 100-1000 of electromechanical relays.

In 1969 Gould Modicon developed the 1
st
PLC.

The 1
st
commertial succesfull PLC ,The 184 was
introduced in 1973 & designed by Michael Greenberg.

Plc over Relay
Relay

Plc
1. Hard wiring
2. Changes are difficult

3. More maintainance
4. More space

5. More power
6. Requires the separate hard
wired timer and counter

1. Less wiring
2. Easy modification

3. Less maintainance
4. Less space

5.Less power
6. Counter and timer are
internal solid state device
PLC Cycle:

There are four basic steps in the operation of all PLCs :
Input Scan
Program Scan
Output Scan
Housekeeping
COMPONENTS OF PLC
CPU(central processing unit)
Input output module
Power supply

Progamming of plc:
Main programming method used for plcs is ladder
logic.
Ladder logics uses the symbols ,instead of words .
Single ckt or rung:

MOTOR STARTEREXAMPLE
Advantages:

Smaller physical size than hard wire solutions.

Easier & faster to make the changes.

Attractive on cost per point basis.

Application can duplicated faster and less expensively.
Disadvantage :-
PLC were designed for relay logic ladder and have
difficulty with some smart devices.

Limited memory.
Application :-
1. Pharamacuitcal
industries.

2. Fountaints in the various shopping mall.
3. Steel industries.
4. Snacks food industry.
Conclusion:

The basic of automation is not to eliminate the
employers it secure the employers on their routine &
precision work.

Without plc automation it is difficult for any industry
to survive in theglobal environment.
