Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a common condition affecting 10-60% of women. It can have significant psychosocial impacts and decrease quality of life. There are several types of incontinence including stress, urgency, and intrinsic sphincter deficiency. Patient evaluation involves understanding symptoms, medical history, physical exam, voiding diary, post-void residual, urinalysis, and sometimes urodynamics or cystoscopy. Conservative treatments include pelvic floor exercises, bladder training, weight loss, and medications. Surgical options vary depending on incontinence type but include slings, bulking agents, and Botox injections. A multidisciplinary approach is often needed to properly diagnose and treat each patient.
