1. S c o p e — Covers requirements for gauging members for plain plug gauges for GO2009)
and NO
GO members in the size range above 40 up to and including 120 mm. These plain plug gauges

can also be used to check the minor diameter of internal threads when made according to
IS : 4218 - 1976 ( Parts I VI) 'ISO metric screw t h r e a d s ' .
2. Material — Shall be as prescribed in IS : 7018 ( Part I )-1973 'Technical (Reaffirmed 2008) for
supply conditions
gauges'.
3. Dimensions — Dimensions and tolerances for the GO and NO GO gauging members for
plain plug gauges shall be as specified in Table 1 read with Fig. 1 to 3.

IS : 3455 - 1971 ' G a u g i n g p r a c t i c e for plain w o r k p i e c e s ( first revision )' a n d IS : 2334 - 1975
' G a u g i n g p r a c t i c e for ISO metric s c r e w t h r e a d s ( first revision ) ' f o r c h e c k i n g plain work-pieces
a n d minor d i a m e t e r of internal t h r e a d s respectively.

5. Air G r o o v e s — For g a u g i n g of blind h o l e s a s u i t a b l e air g r o o v e may be provided on a GO

gauging member.

6. D e s i g n a t i o n

6.1 G a u g i n g m e m b e r s for plain plug g a u g e s shall be d e s i g n a t e d by nominal d i a m e t e r of t h e hole

a n d t h e t o l e r a n c e c l a s s a c c o r d i n g to IS : 919 ( P a r t I) - 1963 ' R e c o m m e n d a t i o n s for limits and fits
for e n g i n e e r i n g : Part I G e n e r a l e n g i n e e r i n g ( first revision )'.

Example:
A GO or NO GO g a u g i n g m e m b e r for plain plug g a u g e to c h e c k a hole or nominal size
50 mm a n d t o l e r a n c e c l a s s H8 a c c o r d i n g to IS : 919 ( P a r t I) - 1963 shall be d e s i g n a t e d a s :

6.2 If t o l e r a n c e s o t h e r than a c c o r d i n g to IS : 919 ( Part I ) - 1963 a r e required, g a u g i n g m e m b e r s for

plain plug g a u g e s shall be d e s i g n a t e d by t h e nominal size of t h e hole a n d t h e limits.

Example:
A GO or NO GO g a u g i n g m e m b e r for plain plug g a u g e to check a hole of nominal size
55 mm and with a tolerance of + 0.2 shall be designated as.

gauges: Part I General'.

8. Marking –Shall be in conformity with IS : 7018 ( P a r t I ) - 1973.

t h e c o m m i t t e e r e s p o n s i b l e for its p r e p a r a t i o n felt if n e c e s s a r y to rationalize it on t h e b a s i s
of ISO 3 6 7 0 - 1 9 7 9 'Blanks for plug g a u g e s a n d h a n d l e s ( t a p e r l o c k a n d trilock ) a n d ring g a u g e s
d e s i g n a n d general d i m e n s i o n s ' , i s s u e d b y t h e International O r g a n i z a t i o n for S t a n d a r d i z a t i o n .

T h e main d e v i a t i o n s a r e :
i) G a u g i n g m e m b e r s for plain plug g a u g e s GO a n d NO GO m e m b e r s ( s i z e r a n g e
a b o v e 40 up to 120 mm ) h a v e b e e n c o m b i n e d to cover t h e r e q u i r e m e n t s of GO a n d
NO GO g a u g i n g m e m b e r s in o n e specification. IS : 6245-1971 ' G a u g i n g m e m b e r s for
plain plug g a u g e s NO GO m e m b e r ( s i z e r a n g e 30 to 100 mm )' s t a n d s w i t h d r a w n ,
ii) D i a m e t e r r a n g e h a s b e e n c h a n g e d to 40-120 mm from t h e earlier 30-100 mm;
iii) T h e d i s c r e p a n c i e s in t h e c o - o r d i n a t i o n of g a u g i n g m e m b e r s a n d handles have been

T h e d e s i g n in t h e r a n g e specified in t h i s specification is with trilock fitting of g a u g i n g

m e m b e r t o t h e h a n d l e . T h i s e x t e n d s t h e i n t e r c h a n g e a b l e e n d s y s t e m t o t h e larger s i z e .

An additional a d v a n t a g e of t h i s type of g a u g e is t h a t t h e g a u g i n g m e m b e r s c a n be r e v e r s e d
w h e n t h e e n t e r i n g e n d i s w o r n . T h e w e d g e s h a p e d p r o n g s o n t h e h a n d l e a r e e n g a g e d with
c o r r e s p o n d i n g g r o o v e s in t h e g a u g i n g m e m b e r s by a s i n g l e s c r e w providing a self c e n t r i n g s u p p o r t
with a positive lock a n d a d e g r e e of rigidity equivalent to t h a t of a solid g a u g e .
