Estimated Time: 2–3 class periods or 1 week as a take-home project
G – Goal
Your goal is to analyze the Philippine tax system by constructing a piecewise function that
models how income tax is calculated based on income brackets. You will also interpret and
critically evaluate the fairness of the tax system.
R – Role
You are a mathematical analyst and informed taxpayer who will model the income tax system
using mathematical tools such as equations, tables, and graphs. You will also act as a citizen
critically evaluating whether the current system is equitable.
A – Audience
Your audience will be:
Your classmates and teacher, who will review your mathematical model.
A simulated panel from the Department of Finance, whom you will present your findings to, as
concerned Filipino citizens.
S – Situation
As future earners and contributors to the nation’s economy, understanding how income tax
works is crucial. The Philippine government uses a progressive tax system, where the amount
