1. Technical introduction

1.1 Description

This article is the user manual of the YDK-SVGH series high-voltage static reactive power
generator of our company.
The YDK-SVGH series high-voltage static reactive power generator is an SVG compensation
System with IGBT as the core. SVG (i.e. static reactive power generator) is one of the main devices
of the Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS for short). It represents the new development
direction of reactive power compensation technology in the current power system. The
high-voltage static reactive power generator can rapidly and continuously provide capacitive and
inductive reactive power, achieve appropriate voltage and reactive power control, and ensure the
stable, efficient and high-quality operation of the power system.
In distribution networks, installing medium and small-capacity devices near certain special loads
(such as electric arc furnaces) can significantly improve the power quality at the connection
points between the loads and the public power grid, for instance, enhancing the power factor,
resolving three-phase imbalance, eliminating voltage flicker and voltage fluctuations, and
suppressing harmonic pollution, etc.

1.2 Technical condition

1.2.1 Environmental conditions

The device can operate normally under the following environmental conditions:

a) Operating environment temperature: 0℃ to +40℃, storage environment temperature: -10℃

to +45 ℃ . No excitation is applied below the limit value, and the device does not undergo

irreversible changes. After the temperature recovers, the device should be able to operate

normally.

b) Relative humidity: The average maximum relative humidity of the wettest month is 80%, and

the average minimum temperature of the month is 25℃ with no condensation on the surface.

c) Atmospheric pressure: 80kPa to 110kPa (relative to an altitude of 2km or less)

d) The site of use shall not have any hazards that endanger the safety of the device, such as fire,

explosion, corrosion, etc., nor shall there be any vibration, shock or collision that exceeds the

provisions of this manual.

1.2.2 Main technical parameters of the device

a) Rated working voltage: 3KV, 6kV, 10kV, 35kV;

b) Rated capacity: 1-100 Mvar;

c) Output reactive power range: Continuously varying from inductive rated reactive power to

capacitive rated reactive power.

d) Controller response time: < 1ms;

e) Total harmonic distortion rate of output voltage (before grid connection) : < 5%;

f) Total harmonic distortion rate of output voltage (after grid connection) : < 3%;

g) Total harmonic distortion rate of output current: < 3%;

1.2.3 Basic principle

The principle wiring diagram of SVG is shown in the above figure. The basic principle of SVG is to
connect the self-commutating bridge circuit in parallel to the power grid through a transformer
or reactor. By appropriately adjusting the amplitude and phase of the output voltage on the AC
side of the bridge circuit, or directly controlling the AC side current, the circuit can absorb or
generate reactive current that meets the requirements, achieving the purpose of dynamic
reactive power compensation.
Mode Waveform Phasor diagram Explanation

No-load If Vs = Vc, Ics = 0

If Vc>Vs, then Ics is the leading

current. Because the

amplitude of this current can

Capacitive be continuously controlled by

working adjusting Vc, STATCOM

functions as a capacitor, and

its capacitive reactance can be

continuously controlled

If Vc<Vs, then Ics is the lagging

current. At this point,

Inductive STATCOM functions as a

working reactor, and its inductive

reactance can be continuously

The above table shows products of 6kV and above, all of which adopt chain structure.
2) Explanation of capacity: Capacity (MVar) indicates the rated maximum regulation capacity
within the dynamic regulation range from inductive to capacitive. For example, YDK-SVGH-C2.0/6
is represented as a 6kV device with a capacity of ±2MVar, which can continuously and smoothly
regulate reactive power within the range of +2000kVar (inductive) to -2000kVar (capacitive).
3) For the 6kV series products and the 10kV YDK-SVGH series products with a capacity of less
than 10MVar, core reactors are usually adopted. The table lists the external dimensions of the
complete set of equipment including core reactors (excluding high-voltage switch cabinets).
High-voltage switchgear is selected or purchased by the user themselves.
4) For series products of 35kV and 10kV with a capacity of over 15MVar, air-core reactors are
usually adopted. The installation dimensions of the control cabinet and power cabinet are listed

2.2 Device components

The device mainly consists of five parts: the control cabinet, the power cabinet, the reactor
cabinet, the connecting reactor and the water (air) cooling system. Among them, the device that
adopts air cooling has no water cooling system.

2.2.1 Control cabinet

The control cabinet is composed of a controller, a display operation panel, a control power supply,
relays, air switches and other parts. The control power supply provides a DC24V power system to
supply power for the controller and relay operation. The display panel includes a liquid crystal
screen display and signal indicator lights. The operation part includes the start button, the stop
button and the reset button. The controller consists of a TPC7062TI touch screen, a main
controller and a remote monitoring computer (optional). The main controller is installed in a
standard 6U chassis.

The main controller adopts a two-stage bus mode, which is convenient for the upgrade and
expansion of the product. The CPU1 board accomplishes system-level scheduling and controls the
CPU2 board through a first-level bus. The CUP2 board manages six optical fiber boards through a
secondary bus.
2.2.2 Power cabinet

Power module layout

The above picture shows the appearance of the 6MVar device power cabinet. Each power cabinet
is installed in three layers with 12 power units, and each phase has 12 power units. Therefore,
there are 3 power cabinets for the 10kV device. The principle of the power unit and the physical
photo are shown in the figure.

Thin-film power capacitors are selected for DC capacitors. Considering the voltage equalization
issue of the series power unit capacitors, power resistors are used for discharge in the design.
This not only enables voltage equalization but also allows for the discharge of DC capacitors after
the input switch is disconnected, thus preventing personal injury accidents.

The electronic bypass circuit adopts SATA/FUJI IGBT devices, which act quickly and reliably,
ensuring that in the event of a power module failure, the controller can reliably bypass the faulty
module within 1ms.
The controller of the power module, except for the sampling circuit, protection circuit and output
drive circuit, almost all logic and communication processing are completed by large-scale FPGA
chips. The intelligent design makes the hardware design simple and the software design flexible,
which is convenient for future functional modification and upgrade. Moreover, it has high
reliability and is less affected by power devices.

The modular structural design makes the product compact, lightweight and highly versatile.
When a power module malfunctions, users only need to replace the module, simplifying the
handling of faults and winning valuable time for resuming production. The external interface of
the module only has two voltage output terminals and two optical fiber terminals. Even
non-professionals can replace the module, which is less likely to cause errors and simplifies
maintenance and repair.

2.2.3 Electric reactor cabinet

The reactor cabinet is composed of several parts, including circuit breakers, soft-start resistors,
Hall sensors and current transformers.
The start-up mode of the device is designed as self-excited start-up. After the main switch is
closed, the system voltage charges the DC capacity of the power unit through the soft-start
resistor. When the charging voltage reaches 80% of the rated value, the control system closes the
soft-start circuit breaker to bypass the soft-start resistor.

2.2.4 Connection electric reactor

The output of the device is connected in parallel to the system side through the connection
reactor.

3. Device control panel introduction

3.1 Operating status

When the device is powered on, it operates in five working states: standby, charging, running,
tripping and discharging. The descriptions of each state and the transition relationships are as
follows:
1) Standby state
After the device is powered on, it immediately enters the standby state and then conducts a
self-check. If there are no faults and the status is normal, the ready light will be turned on. If the
user's start-up command is received in the ready state, the main circuit breaker will be closed.
After the main circuit breaker is closed, it immediately enters the charging state.
2) Charging status
It indicates that the DC capacity of the device is being charged. Since the device is self-excited to
start, the main circuit breaker closing indicates that the device has entered the charging state.
3) Operating status
It indicates that the device is in a grid-connected operation state and can output current under
various control modes to achieve the effect of compensating reactive power, negative sequence
or harmonics. If an alarm occurs during this process, the alarm indicator light will be on and it will
not affect the normal operation of the device. If recoverable faults such as overcurrent or
synchronization loss occur during this process, the device will be locked. After the faults are
eliminated through manual or automatic reset, the device will be unlocked and operated again. If
a serious malfunction occurs or a shutdown command is received during this process, the device
will issue a tripping command and switch to the tripping state.
4) Trip status
It indicates that the device is executing the tripping command. As soon as the tripping state is
entered, the device immediately issues a tripping command. The discharge state was detected
after the main circuit breaker was disconnected.
5) Discharge state
It indicates that the device is discharging. After the main circuit breaker is disconnected, the DC
capacity will slowly decrease until it reaches 0. After this state lasts for 10 seconds, the device
automatically switches to standby mode.

3.2 Control cabinet HMI introduction

The device provides three ways to operate the device: a liquid crystal operation panel, control
buttons and a remote background. The LCD operation panel and control buttons are arranged on
the control cabinet, and the remote background is generally placed in the remote monitoring
room at a certain distance from the device. The control buttons on the control cabinet are always
valid. The control instructions from the LCD panel and the remote background are only valid at
any time, which can be selected through the "Local/Remote" command on the LCD panel of the
control cabinet.
The control cabinet is composed of indicator lights, operation buttons and liquid crystal touch

5 Equipment maintenance, transportation and storage

5.1 Description

Our company adheres to the principle of quality first and customer priority. We have adopted
strict quality standards for every link of the device, from design principle, component selection,
production and manufacturing, factory testing, transportation and installation, etc., thus ensuring
that the product can operate continuously with extremely high reliability under normal usage
conditions.
To ensure that the device always operates under appropriate conditions and to prevent its
reliability from being affected by changes in operating conditions, it is necessary to enable users
to understand maintenance knowledge and do a good job in the maintenance of the equipment.
Here is a brief introduction to the basic maintenance knowledge.

5.2 Maintenance work during the initial operation period

1. The connecting parts of all parts of the device should be inspected and cleaned, including the
input/output connections of the reactor cabinet and all power input/output connections of the
power cabinet.
2. After about one week of operation, the temperature at all the conductive connection points
inside the device should be checked with a non-contact temperature measuring instrument.
When the temperature relative to the environment rises by more than 20℃, the machine should
be shut down at an appropriate time, and the screws, bolts, etc. at the conductive connection
points, grounding wires, etc. should be tightened to meet the requirement of reliable contact.

5.3 Maintenance work during long-term operation

1. During operation, the condition of the device should be inspected every day. If abnormal
sounds are heard inside the device, no air is discharged from the exhaust outlet or the air volume
is smaller than usual, the machine should be stopped immediately and the fan replaced. When
the device has an unpleasant smell (especially ozone smell), the manufacturer should be notified
immediately for handling.
2. After operation, a planned shutdown should be arranged once a year, and one power unit
should be opened for random inspection of capacitors. If any of the capacitors has electrolyte
leakage, safety valve leakage or capacitor body expansion, the manufacturer should be notified
immediately for handling.
3. After being put into operation, the work of measuring the contact point temperature should be
repeated once every quarter.
4. The indoor area should be kept clean to avoid dust accumulation.
5. Anti-rodent treatment should be carried out indoors to prevent small animals from entering
the device.
6. Pay attention to maintaining the indoor temperature. When the indoor temperature exceeds
38℃, cooling measures should be taken as soon as possible, such as enhancing indoor and
outdoor ventilation, turning on the air conditioner, and opening the cabinet door of the power
cabinet, etc. If the indoor temperature drops below 2℃, the power cabinet fan should be
stopped. It can be restarted only when the room temperature is above 20℃.

5.4 Maintenance work during the shutdown process after
