Solving Oblique Triangles with Law of Sines

This document explains the Law of Sines, which is used to solve oblique triangles when certain sides and angles are known. It details how to apply the law for different scenarios, such as ASA, SAA, and SSA configurations, and provides examples to illustrate the process. Additionally, it discusses the conditions under which one, two, or no triangles can be formed based on given information.

2 The Law of Sines

If none of the angles of a triangle is a right angle, then the triangle is called oblique. We
cannot use the methods of Section 7.1 to solve oblique triangles.

In this section, we will learn how to solve oblique triangles where one side and two angles
are known (ASA or SAA) or where two sides and the angle opposite one of them are known
(SSA).

Law of Sines
For a triangle with side a, b, and c and opposite angles A, B, and C, respectively,
sin A sin B sin C

a b c

It is also helpful to keep in mind that the sum of the interior angles of a triangle is 180 . In
other words, A + B + C = 180 .

Solve SSA Triangles

When two sides and the angle opposite one of them is known, there may be one triangle,
two triangles, or no triangles that satisfy the given information.
If the sides a and b are given and A is the angle opposite a that is given, then
• If b sin A > a, there is no triangle.
• If b sin A = a, there is one triangle and it is a right triangle.
• If a b, there is one triangle.
• If b sin A < a and a < b, there are two triangles.
