Reading for Success
The first step to success is reading. Learning to read is a challenging
task for students nowadays. It has been a very big problem in every school in
the country for the past two decades now. According to Vice-President Sara
Zimmerman Duterte, also the DepEd Secretary, in her speech during the
launching of Brigada Pagbasa, “This country is now going through an
education crisis. However, teachers and parents must team up to help the
students read better. Throughout time, we have our English teachers who
help us improve non-readers to, at least, become frustrated readers,
frustrated readers to become instructional readers, and so on…Big thanks to
these teachers because almost all of these struggling readers are now
greatly improving due to consistent reading activities given to these
students throughout the post-pandemic year. Though some still need more
improvement, they have become better than they were before. Obviously,
they are all doing a great job.”
Due to the fact that we had faced a pandemic and had to stay at home
for two years, students were assumed to have given too little importance
and time to reading. Some parents may have also been lax in guiding their
children while they (students) were more focused on their gadgets which
made it harder for them to focus on learning.
Reading is considered a foundation for learning. It is also a visible
indicator of being educated. Others consider reading as the greatest power
one could have while navigating this world. Indeed, you won’t thrive in
school if you don't know how to read. If you know how to read, you learn
about knowledge, history, skills, language, and many more.
Finally, reading serves as a gateway to success which enables you to
reach your dreams. Obviously, living makes no sense if we can’t achieve
anything in life. When you become successful, it makes you very happy.
Success becomes a reality when we have learned something. Learning is fun;
it brings knowledge. So why not choose reading?
