[50 marks]
Write your name and index number in the spaces provided above.
Answer two questions only.
You are allowed an additional 15 minutes before the start of the examination to read this
question paper. During this time, you must not touch the apparatus.
You are required to record your observation as soon as they are made. The observations and any
mathematical workings and answers to the questions should be written in your answer booklet;
scrap paper must not be used. Attach your graphs to your answer booklet.
You are not expected to copy out your work. The record may be kept in pencil provided it can be
read clearly. If any piece of the apparatus provided has a label with a letter on it this letter must
be recorded in your answer booklet in order that the Examiner may identify which set of
apparatus you used.
Neither a detailed description of the apparatus nor a full account of the method of carrying out
the experiments is required. You should however, note any special precaution you have taken
clearly.
You may use diagrams or otherwise, to express exactly what the readings you have recorded
mean and how they were obtained.

You are provided with a meter rule, a retort stands with a clamp, a helical spring, set of
masses, plasticine a stop watch, a pointer and other necessary apparatus.
Using the diagram as a guide to perform the experiment.
(i) Set up the apparatus as shown in the diagram above.
(ii) Suspend the mass, M = 200 g on the hanger and M must remain on it throughout
the experiment.
(iii) Read and record the initial pointer position, 𝑙0 on the metre rule.
(iv) Add a mass, 𝑚 = 50 g to the hanger.
(v) Read and record the new pointer position, 𝑙 on the metre rule.
(vi) Determine the extension 𝑒 = |𝑙 − 𝑙0 |.
(vii) Displace the mass slightly downward so that the spring mass system oscillates
vertically.
(viii) Read and record the time, t, for 20 completes oscillations.
(ix) Determine the period, T and evaluate 𝑇 2 .
(x) Repeat the experiment for four other values of 𝑚 = 100 g, 150 g, 200 g, and 250
g. In each case, evaluate T and 𝑇 2 .
(xi) Tabulate the results.
(xii) Plot a graph with 𝑇 2 on the ordinate and e on the abscissa.
(xiii) Determine the slope, s, of the graph.
4𝜋 2
(xiv) Evaluate 𝑘 = .

(xv) State two precautions taken to ensure accurate results.
[21 marks]
(b) (i) Define Young’s modulus.
(ii) A spring 30.0 cm long is stretched to 40.0 cm by a load of 60 N. Calculate the
energy stored in the spring.

2. (a)
You have been provided with a calorimeter with a mark inside, a thermometer, a retort
stands with clamp, a glass stirrer, a stop watch, non-conducting mat, aluminium foil,
black polythene, a beaker, a measuring cylinder, hot water and elastic bands.
(i) Cover the entire outer surface of the calorimeter with the aluminium foil using the
elastic bands.
(ii) Set up the apparatus as shown in Fig. 2.
(iii) Fetch some boiling water and pour it into the calorimeter up to the mark and stir
continuously until the temperature reaches 90 ℃ and start the stop watch.
(iv) Record the temperature 𝛼𝑖 of the water at two minutes intervals for 10 minutes,
where 𝑖 = 2 min, 4 min, 6 min, 8 min and 10 min.
(v) Empty the calorimeter and replace the aluminium foil with the black polythene
provided.
(vi) Repeat the experiment and record the temperature 𝛽𝑖 .
(vii) Tabulate the results.
(viii) Plot the cooling curves with 𝛼𝑖 and 𝛽𝑖 on the vertical axis and time, t on the
horizontal axis using the same axes.
(ix) From the respective curves, determine the times, 𝑡1 and 𝑡2 taken for 𝛼𝑖 and 𝛽𝑖 to
fall from 80 ℃ to 72.5 ℃
(x) Determine the rates of fall in temperature, 𝑅1 to 𝑅2 from 80 ℃ to 72.5 ℃ for
aluminium foil and black polythene respectively.
(xi) What conclusion can be drawn from the experiment using the values of 𝑅1 to 𝑅2
(xii) State two precautions taken to ensure accurate results.
[21 marks]
(b) (i) State two ways by which heat losses are minimized in the vacuum flask.
(ii) Water of mass 150 g cools from 85 ℃ to 65 ℃ in 5 minutes. Determine the rate
of heat loss if the specific heat capacity of water is 4200 𝐽𝑘𝑔−1 𝐾 −1 .
