Nature and Definition of Life skills
As defined in the document of World Health Organization life skills
are “abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable
individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of
everyday life.” It is also defined as “behavioral changes or
behavioral development approach designed to address a balance of
three areas: knowledge attitude and skills” (UNICEF‟s definition).
➢ Life skills are the abilities and behaviors that help us navigate
everyday life challenges, make informed decisions, and
interact effectively with others. These skills aren't typically
taught in traditional academic settings but are crucial for
personal development, career success, and healthy
relationships. Here are some essential life skills
Components of Life Skill
1. Critical Thinking
The ability to analyze, evaluate, and interpret information
objectively to form reasoned judgments and solutions. Critical
thinking involves questioning assumptions, recognizing biases,
and thinking independently to make informed decisions.
2. Self-Confidence
Belief in one's own abilities, qualities, and judgment. Self-
confidence allows individuals to approach tasks and
challenges with a positive outlook and resilience, knowing they
have the capability to succeed or learn from the experience.
3. Self-Awareness
The conscious knowledge of one’s own character, feelings,
motives, and desires. Self-awareness helps individuals
understand their strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and how
their behavior affects others.
4. Self-Esteem
The sense of one's own worth and personal value. Self-esteem
reflects how much people appreciate and like themselves,
impacting their outlook on life, mental health, and interactions
with others.
5. Decision Making
The process of identifying and choosing between options
based on values, goals, and potential outcomes. Effective
decision-making involves weighing pros and cons, considering
possible consequences, and selecting the best choice for a
given situation.
6. Interpersonal Relationships
Connections and interactions between individuals based on
trust, respect, empathy, and mutual support. Building positive
interpersonal relationships fosters a sense of belonging,
collaboration, and emotional well-being.
7. Reflective Communication
Communicating thoughtfully, actively listening, and providing
feedback that reflects understanding and respect for the other
person's perspective. Reflective communication enhances
mutual understanding, strengthens relationships, and helps
resolve conflicts.
8. Peer Resistance
The ability to withstand or say no to peer pressure when it
conflicts with one’s values, goals, or well-being. Peer
resistance empowers individuals to make independent
choices without feeling pressured to conform.
9. Knowing Rights and Duties
Understanding one's own legal, moral, and social rights, as
well as the responsibilities that accompany them. Being aware
of rights and duties promotes informed, responsible actions
within a community or society.
