WEEK 2: ASSIGNMENT 2

Question 1:
Instantaneous overcurrent relay operates _______.

a) instantaneously
b) within 2 to 4 milliseconds
c) within 20 to 40 milliseconds
d) with an intentional time delay
Answer: (c)
Question 2:
The definite time overcurrent relay is used for
(i) protection of radial feeder
(ii) overload alarm of generators
(iii) stalling protection of induction motors

a) (i) & (ii)

b) (ii) & (iii)
c) (iii) & (i)
d) (i) (ii) & (iii)
Answer: (d)
Question 3:
Which of the following relay cannot provide backup protection?

a) Instantaneous overcurrent relay

b) Definite minimum time overcurrent relay
c) Inverse time overcurrent relay
d) Inverse definite minimum time overcurrent relay
Answer: (a)
Question 4:
What is transient overreach phenomena?

a) It is the tendency of a relay to operate after a definite time for faults beyond its
section.
b) It is the tendency of a relay to operate instantaneously for faults beyond its section.
c) It is the tendency of a relay to operate after a definite time for faults within its section.
d) It is the tendency of a relay to operate instantaneously for faults within its section.
Answer: (b)
Question 5:
Plug settings of ground relays are _______.

a) equal to the phase relays

b) higher than the phase relays
c) lower than the phase relays
d) all of the above
Answer: (c)
Question 6:
1|Page
Usually, the procedure of relay coordination starts from ______.

a) load end
b) source end
c) middle of the line
d) all of the above
Answer: (a)
Question 7:
What are the advantages of the inverse time overcurrent relay?

a) It operates faster for fault near generators.

b) It provides backup protection.
c) It maintains selectivity criteria of the protection system.
d) All of the above
Answer: (d)
Question 8:
The characteristic of which of the following relay closely matches with the characteristic of
fuse?

a) Normal inverse time overcurrent relay

b) Very inverse time overcurrent relay
c) Extremely inverse time overcurrent relay
d) All of the above
Answer: (c)
Question 9:
Fig. 1 shows a single line diagram of a radial feeder which is protected by definite time
overcurrent relays. The time of operation of the relay R3 is 0.25 s for the worst fault.
Assuming coordination time interval between two successive relays as 0.3 s, determine the
time of operation of relays R1 and R2 for the faults in sections I and II, respectively.

Fig. 1 Single line diagram of a radial feeder

a) 0.85 s and 0.3 s

b) 0.85 s and 0.55 s
c) 0.55 s and 0.85 s
d) 0.55 s and 0.3 s
Answer: (b)
Solution:
Time of operation of relay R3 is 0.25 second for the worst fault.
Time of operation of relay R2 (considering time margin of 0.3 sec between relays R2 and
R3) will be equal to 0.25 + 0.3 = 0.55 sec. Similarly, time of operation of relay R1
(considering time margin of 0.3 sec between relays R1 and R2) will be equal to 0.55 + 0.3 =
0.85 sec.
Question 10:
Determine the time of operation (Top) of an IDMT relay (R) having normal inverse
characteristics for a fault current of 900 A. The setting range of the relay is 50%-200% of 1
2|Page
A in steps of 25%. The PS and TDS of an IDMT relay are 150% of 1 A and 0.25, respectively.
The CT used has the ratio of 100/1 A.

The formula to calculate time of operation is given below

0.14
Top =  TDS
( MP 0.02
)
−1

a) 0.959 s
b) 1.959 s
c) 2.959 s
d) 3.959 s
Answer: (a)
Solution:
900
𝐼𝐹 = 900 𝐴, 𝐼𝐹(𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦) = =9𝐴
100/1
𝐼𝐹(𝑠𝑒𝑐𝑜𝑛𝑑𝑎𝑟𝑦) 9
𝑀𝑃 = = =6
𝐼𝑝𝑖𝑐𝑘𝑢𝑝 1.5 × 1
0.14
𝑇𝑜𝑝 = 0.02 × 0.25 = 0.959 𝑠𝑒𝑐
(6 − 1)
