STATUS MESSAGES, FAULTS,

WARNINGS AND EVENTS 2

The software provides, at all times, information about the inverter status, warnings and faults:

• STATUS messages provide information about the current state of the inverter (e.g. ready to start,
operating…).

• A FAULT is a condition that, if satisfied, will force the inverter to stop (e.g. an islanding condition has
been detected).

• WARNING messages provide useful information about what is going on in the inverter (e.g. derating,
a module has stopped, heating is active…). They should be checked periodically, and the
corresponding actions should be taken (if required).

NOTICE

For further information about faults and warnings, please consult the Annex 01 – Troubleshooting
(HEMG3SW01AN01).

Also, the inverter includes two status LEDs in the Main Control Cabinet door which show its operation
status:

DESCRIPTION OF VISUALIZATION
PARAMETERS 3

Visualization and status parameters cannot be modified and display useful information about the inverter,
such as: current and voltage per phase, amount of energy generated by the inverter, fault messages and
many more.

Group SV1: Internal visualization

This group allows the visualization of the internal state of the system. It shows the status of the
equipment, the starting conditions, the status of the AC and DC switchgear, the status of the digital inputs
and outputs, temperatures of the electronic boards that make up the equipment and the temperatures of

Subgroup SV1.1: Status

SCREEN UNITS DESCRIPTION

Shows the current fault code in case there is any. An example is given below to
explain the interpretation of the parameter's faults.
Example:
The parameter returns a decimal number which needs to be transformed to
binary. Then, the last ten digits must be and converted back to decimal. If it is a
fault associated with a DC channel, the channel is indicated in the first six digits
of the binary value:
SV1.1.1-Current fault = NO FLT NONE
1. SV1.1.1-Current fault = 1069
2. Binary (1069) = 000001 0000101101
3. Decimal (0000101101) = 45 → F45: General Isolation
For this case, it is [F45: General Isolation] on channel 1.
Note: For further information about faults and warnings, please consult the Annex
01 – Troubleshooting (HEMG3SW01AN01).
When a module fault results in a system fault, this parameter shows the number
SV1.1.2-Current fault module = 0 NONE of the module that has produced the original fault. If several modules have
produced the fault, it will show the last module that reported it.

SV7.1.2: Faults history

This subgroup allows to visualise the list of the last ten faults of the system in chronological order. The
parameters that register the date contain two Modbus addresses corresponding to the date and time
of the fault history register. Refer to the Parameters table document (SW Manual HEMG3SW01) for
the Modbus registers of each parameter.

The following is an example of how the date and time registers for each fault are interpreted internally.

The parameters return decimal numbers recording the date and time of the fault occurred. This
information must be transformed into binary and then converted back to decimal. The process is as
follows. Example:

• Date: 5/9/2037

o Day (5): it is transformed into binary by shifting 11 bits to the left obtaining 0010 1000 0000 0000
0000. The decimal value is 10240.
o Month (9): transformed into binary by shifting 7 bits to the left to obtain 0100 1000 0000. The
decimal value is 1152.
o Year (2037): 2000 must be subtracted from the year. The decimal value is 37.
Once the decimal values of the date have been obtained, they are added together to obtain 11429.
This value is read by Modbus. For the time the process is similar:

• Time: 16:11
o Time (16): it is transformed into binary by shifting 8 bits to the left, obtaining 0001 0000 0000 0000
0000. The decimal value is 4096.
o Minutes (11): The decimal value is 11.
When adding the decimals that have come out of the hour and minute conversion, the value is 4107.
This value is read by Modbus.

36 DESCRIPTION OF VISUALIZATION PARAMETERS

POWER ELECTRONICS HEM / HEMK / MPCSM / MPCSK GEN3

Grupo SV9: IMD

This group allows the visualization of the insulation monitoring device (IMD) information. This meter is
able to measure the earth resistance of the equipment. If this is too low, the equipment is internally
configured to go to a non-risk situation until the technical staff can perform a shunt to earth. There are
two types of insulation testers: two-channel (one channel to measure AC and one channel to measure
DC) and five-channel (one channel to measure AC and 4 channels to measure DC).

Note: Normally, for MPCSK/M equipment, the five-channel option is used. For HEM/K equipment, the
two-channel option is used.

G5.2.1.10-Delay Unbal
0 to 60 s Indicates the delay in the unbalance modules. Yes
Halfbus = 10 s

Subgroup G5.3: Anti islanding

An anti-island condition occurs when the inverter keeps injecting on the grid although it does not have
voltage because it comes into resonance with some load. This is dangerous because all the grids
should be without current but there is a section (island) where current is flowing without being
EN
controlled.

Currently, there are two modes: active and passive.

In active mode, the inverter causes a disturbance in the grid (slightly distorts the current waveform). If
the inverter is connected to the grid frequency cannot vary, but, if there is an island, the frequency will
vary due to the distortion.

In passive mode, the inverter only checks frequency variation during a time lapse. If the frequency
variation (∆𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞) overcomes a threshold during the time lapse, the anti-island protection will be
triggered.

∆𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞 = 𝑐𝑢𝑟𝑟𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦 − 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝑓𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑒𝑛𝑐𝑦

Simultaneous mode is a combination of active and passive modes.

82 DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMMING PARAMETERS

POWER ELECTRONICS HEM / HEMK / MPCSM / MPCSK GEN3

Subgroup G6.5: PPC

To establish communication with the inverter, the SCADA or PPC (Power Plant Controller) must first
initiate communication via the PPC Heartbeat variable10. To do this, the SCADA or PPC must write in
this variable a value other than 0 (valid range 0 to 65535) and update the value regularly. Each time a
signal is received from the PPC Heartbeat variable, the parameter [G6.5.9- PPC Heartbeat Reg], a
read-only variable, is updated.

If the SCADA or PPC does not update the value in the PPC Heartbeat variable and a time greater than
that indicated by parameter [G6.5.10- Ramp act time] elapses, the active and reactive power reference
is modified to those configured in parameters [G6.5.3-Home P ref] and [G6.5.4-Home Q ref]. The
gradients with which the inverter works to reach these references are those configured in parameters
[G6.5.5-P rec ramp] and [G6.5.6-Q rec ramp].

If before the time set in [G6.5.10-Ramp act time] expires, communications are re-established, the
equipment will go to the references indicated by the SCADA or PPC with the recovery ramps [G6.5.5- EN
P rec ramp] and [G6.5.6-Q rec ramp]. When the new references indicated by the SCADA or PPC are
reached, operation is resumed with the initially configured operating values.

If the time indicated by parameter [G6.5.10- Ramp act time] has expired and the time indicated by
[G6.5.1-Home refs timeout] has also expired, then the P and Q references are modified to those
configured in parameters [G6.5.3-Home P ref] and [G6.5.4-Home Q ref] according to the type of P and
Q control that is configured at that time, and the W152: PPC Communications warning is triggered. If
communications are re-established before the loss of communications time expires, proceed in the
same way as in the previous paragraph.

On the other hand, if the three times indicated in parameters [G6.5.10-Ramp act time], [G6.5.1-Home
refs timeout] and [G6.5.2-Comm timeout] expire, fault F51: PPC Communications is triggered. At this
point, the inverter stops. The equipment is configured to work with the operation references defined by
the SCADA or PPC. Once the fault has been resolved, the inverter will go to the references indicated
by means of the recovery ramps [G6.5.5-P rec ramp] and [G6.5.6-Q rec ramp].

If the PPC or SCADA writes a zero to the PPC Heartbeat variable, the system is disabled. This step is
equivalent to setting [G6.5.1-Timeout refs to home] and [G6.5.2-Timeout de com] to "Disabled".

Note: Admin role or higher is required to modify these parameters.

DESCRIPTION OF PROGRAMMING PARAMETERS 87

HEM / HEMK / MPCSM / MPCSK GEN3 POWER ELECTRONICS

Group G13: Normative

This group allows the configuration of variables related to functionalities implemented by regulation. It
allows access to enable and/or disable the fast logger and also to adjust this functionality.

Subgroup G13.1: Fast Logger (CAISO)

This subgroup allows the configuration of variables related to the CAISO (California Independent
System Operator) standard. The purpose of this standard is to obtain information on what happened
during a period prior to a certain defined event and what happened during a period after this event.
This information must be stored on the SD card (information for the last 30 days), so that it can be
accessed for root cause analysis.
The events that are considered to trigger this functionality are:
• Power stages faults
• Frequency variations that are over a certainconfigurablevalue (FRT).
• LVRT/HVRT events that lead to a reactive power injectiontogrid
• Transitory grid overvoltage that leads to a cessation of reactive power injection
• Faults that cause the stop of the inverter

The data that should be saved per event is:

• Inverter exit voltage per phase

• Inverter exit current per phase
• Grid frequency
• Inverter fault code
• Inverter warning code
• DC voltage
• DC current
• Active power
• Reactive power

The synchronization between the inverters that belong to the same plant would is by means of a GPS
(hardware).

Notes:

- Parameters within this group will only be shown if the logger has been previously enabled by
PE Staff.
- Please notice role Admin or higher is required to modify these parameters.

MODBUS COMMUNICATION
5
Supported Modbus function codes
Serial communications protocol provided by FREESUN inverters adheres to Modicon's industrial
standard communications protocol, Modbus. The inverter uses the following two reading and writing
functions from the Modbus protocol:

Function Description Registers number

3 Registers reading 120
6 Writing of a single register 1
16 Multiple writing of registers 120

The implementation of this function code in the inverter allows reading up to 120 registers of a parameter
group in a single frame. To access consecutive memory registers, but belonging to different groups, the
request should be performed using as many frames as groups are involved.

Modbus function code nº 3: Registers reading

This function code allows the Modbus controller (master) reading the content of the data registers
indicated in the inverter (slave). This function code only admits unicast addressing. Broadcast or
groupcast addressing are not possible with this function code.

The implementation of this function code in the inverter allows reading up to 120 registers with
consecutive addresses of the inverter in a single frame.

In the next example, a frame is shown where the master tries to read the minimum DC voltage via
communications. The information that should be attached in the request frame is the following one:

• Data address of the inverter.

• Modbus function code (3 Registers reading).
• Starting Data address.
• Number of registers to read.
• CRC-16 code.
The answer of the inverter (slave) should contain the following fields:

• Data address of the slave.

• Modbus function code (3 Registers reading).
• Bytes number for reading.
• Bytes number / 2 registers.
• CRC-16 code.
Each register consists of 2 bytes (2x8bits=16 bits). This is the default registry length of the inverter.

Operation example of Modbus function code nº3 (registers

reading)
Suppose we want to read via communications the minimum DC voltage to start the inverter. This data
corresponds to parameter G2.1.1-Vdc low. The frame that should be transmitted is:

Starting Data Address

Modbus Address Modbus Function Code Registers Number CRC-16
(40282)
0x0A 0x03 0x00A0 0x0001 0x8553

Suppose that minimum DC Voltage of the equipment is 1050V (Modbus value 1050 in decimal is
equivalent to 0x41A in hexadecimal). The answer of the slave would be:

Modbus Address Modbus Function Code Bytes Number Data (address 20) CRC-16
0x0A 0x03 0x02 0x41A 0x9D84

Modbus function code nº 6: Registers single writing EN

This function code allows the Modbus controller (master) to write the content of one single register
indicated in the equipment (slave), as long as that register is not “Read only”. Registers writing by the
master does not impede the later modification of those registers by the slave.

The implementation of this function code in the equipment allows writing one registers of the equipment
in a single frame.

Up next, a frame is shown where the master tries to write the content of a register. The information that
must be attached in the request frame is:

• Data address of the slave.

• Modbus function code (6 Register single writing).
• Data address of the register.
• Content for writing.
• CRC code.
The answer of the slave includes:

• Data address of the slave.

• Modbus function code (6 Register single writing).
• Data address of the register.
• Content written.
• CRC code.

Modbus function code nº 16: Registers writing

This function code allows the Modbus controller (master) to write the content of the data registers
indicated in the inverter (slave), as long as those registers are not “Read only”. Registers writing by the
master does not impede the later modification of those registers by the slave.

The implementation of this function code in the inverter allows writing up to 5 registers of the inverter in
a single frame.

Up next, a frame is shown where the master tries to write the content of a register. The information that
should be attached in the request frame is:

• Data address of the slave.

• Modbus function code (16 Registers writing).
• Starting data address.
• Number of registers to write.
• Number of bytes for writing.
• Content of registers for writing.
• CRC-16 code.

The answer of the slave includes:

• Data address of the slave.

• Modbus function code (16 Registers writing).
• Starting data address.
• Written registers number.
• CRC-16 code.
