Paragraph 1: what the charts show


Important: include all key details in your description of the chart

(A) Key pattern for charts and tables

The bar chart shows the amount of.. [percentage of] [quantity of] [number of]
[volume of]…[something] that [was] [past participle]

Note:
1. important pattern: the amount of something that was (past participle)
2. amount of / percentage of / quantity of / number of / volume of
3. illustrates (pictures - diagrams) / shows (normal) / gives information about
4. top (first) chart / bottom (second) graph
5. line graph / bar chart / pie chart / flow chart / diagram / map / table

(B) Language for categories / groups etc.

1. simply list the categories: by A, B, and C.


2. divided by [grouped by] age [sex] [marital status] [type of (s/t)]
3. (divided into two [number / several] groups [categories] by
[age/sex/frequency/nationality etc]

Example:

Q1 (A)

The line graph shows the amount of water that was used globally divided into
three categories - agriculture, industry and homes - between 1900 and 2000.

The line graph shows the amount of water that was used globally by agriculture,
industry and in homes, in the 100 year period between 1900 and 2000.

(C) Useful synonyms or near synonyms:

(i) types of / forms of / categories of / means of


(ii) items / goods
(iii) carried / transported

(D) Future: a forecast / a prediction (of future consumption / production / use)

Example:

Q7 ...together with a forecast [of future consumption] until 2030.

(E) together with: a good way to refer to TWO things shown by THE SAME chart
or table etc.

“together with” adding two topics (e.g. the graph shows X AND Y – X together
with Y – this requires X and Y to have the SAME subject – for example, the same
graph

(F) Key pattern for processes

The diagram [flow chart] illustrates [shows / describes] the (complex [involved] /
four stage / multi-stage) process by which XXX is produced (from YYY / by YYY /
in a YYY)

Or:

illustrates the stages in the XXX of (the) YYY (from / in ZZZ)

Alternatives:

is produced from (in) / is generated from (in) / is made from

Example:

Q27: The top diagram illustrates the stages in the life of the silkworm and the
bottom flow chart shows the (quite complex) process by which silk cloth is
produced from [made from] the silk from the silkworm

(G) Key language for maps/ plans:

Note: these questions often contrast now with past, or now with future plans.

as it is currently / as it used to be / as it was / as it will be / look (after / when


the (re) development (is completed / has been completed))

Example

Q15 The two diagrams show the university sports centre as it is currently and as
it will be when the redevelopment (work) has been completed.

industry and in homes between 1900 and 2000, and the table below shows the
amount of water used per person in Brazil and Congo in 2000, together with the

Ans: The bar chart gives information about the number of minutes of three different
types of phone calls - local fixed line calls, national and international fixed line
calls, and mobile calls - that were made in the UK between 1995 and 2002.
