Notes on Conjunctions

A conjunction is a word that joins words, phrases, or clauses.


Types of Conjunctions:
1. Coordinating Conjunctions (FANBOYS):
o for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
o They join words/phrases/clauses of equal importance.
o Example: She was tired but she kept working.
2. Subordinating Conjunctions:
o after, although, because, if, since, unless, when, while, etc.
o They join a dependent clause with an independent clause.
o Example: I stayed home because it was raining.
3. Correlative Conjunctions:
o pairs of conjunctions used together.
o both…and, either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also
o Example: She is both intelligent and hardworking.

Functions of Conjunctions:
• To add ideas: and, also, as well as
• To contrast ideas: but, yet, although
• To show cause/effect: because, so, therefore
• To show choice/alternative: or, either…or
• To show condition: if, unless, provided that
