Materi: The Five Pillars of Islam
A. Pendahuluan
Modul ajar ini disusun untuk membantu mahasiswa menguasai keterampilan bahasa
Inggris yang terintegrasi dalam listening, speaking, reading, dan writing. Materi utama
berkaitan dengan teks tentang Five Pillars of Islam serta penguasaan tata bahasa dasar
khususnya penggunaan 'to be'. Modul ini juga dilengkapi dengan latihan soal dan kunci
jawaban.
1. Listening
"The Five Pillars of Islam are the core principles that guide the life of every Muslim.
They consist of Shahada, Salat, Zakat, Sawm, and Hajj. Shahada is the testimony that
there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is His Messenger. This is the foundation of
faith. Salat refers to the daily prayers, which are performed five times a day at specific
times. Zakat is the obligation to give a portion of one’s wealth to those in need, which
teaches generosity and social responsibility. Sawm is the fasting during the holy month of
Ramadan, when Muslims abstain from food, drink, and immoral behavior from dawn
until sunset. Finally, Hajj is the pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, which every
Muslim must perform at least once in their lifetime if they are physically and financially
able."
a. Latihan Listening:
1) Catat lima pilar yang disebutkan dalam teks.
2) Tuliskan makna dari masing-masing pilar.

1) Mahasiswa menjelaskan kembali Five Pillars of Islam dengan kata-kata mereka
sendiri.
2) Latihan tanya jawab berpasangan.

3. Reading
a. Teks Bacaan:
"Islam is a religion built upon five essential practices, known as the Five Pillars. The
first is Shahada, which is the declaration of faith that Allah is the only God and
Muhammad is His final Messenger. The second is Salat, the performance of prayers
five times a day, which helps Muslims stay connected to their Creator. The third is
Zakat, a system of giving that ensures wealth is shared with the poor and needy. The
fourth pillar is Sawm, which means fasting during the month of Ramadan. This
practice teaches self-control, patience, and empathy for the less fortunate. The fifth
and final pillar is Hajj, a pilgrimage to the holy city of Makkah, where Muslims from
all over the world gather in unity and equality. Together, these Five Pillars shape the
spiritual and social life of Muslims."

5. Grammar Focus: To Be
a. Konsep Dasar 'To Be':
1) Bentuk To Be

2) Fungsi:
a) Sebagai linking verb (penghubung).
ex: Allah is the only God.
b) Menyatakan keberadaan/kondisi.
ex: Muslims are united by faith.
c) Membentuk kalimat pasif.
ex: The Quran is recited every day.

b. Sertakan refleksi singkat (2–3 kalimat) tentang pentingnya pilar tersebut dalam
kehidupan sehari-hari.
2. Kalimat dengan To Be
a. Buat 5 kalimat sederhana menggunakan to be dengan subjek berbeda (I, You,

b. Kalimat harus relevan dengan tema agama, pendidikan, atau kehidupan sehari-
