CHM229:DATA ANALYSIS AND INTERPRETATIONS

Course Outcomes: Through this course students should be able to

CO1 :: recall basic concepts of data analysis techniques.

CO2 :: explain statistical methods for interpreting engineering datasets.

CO3 :: use tools to analyze chemical engineering data.

CO4 :: calculate datasets to identify patterns and trends.

CO5 :: assess effectiveness of statistical methods and tools.

CO6 :: develop models for advanced data interpretation applications.

Unit I
Introduction to statistics : collection and classification of data, the simplest discrete and
continuous distributions; discrete & continuous and normal distributions, measure of central tendency
mean; median mode, statistical inference, hypothesis and estimation, correlation and co-efficient of
correlation, lines of regression, exploratory data analysis, graphical representation of data- bar charts,
multiple bar graph, histograms, pie chart, box plot
Unit II
Introduction to probability and its application : principle of counting, permutation and
combination, definition of probability; probability and set notations, addition law of probability,
multiplication law of probability; baye’s theorem, random variable; discrete and continuous probability
distribution, probable error; normal approximation to binomial distribution
Unit III
Methods of data collection : Collection of primary data, observation method; Processing
operations, collection of data through schedule processing operations, processing operations;
elements of analysis, statistics in research, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion
Unit IV
Design and analysis of experiments : introduction to design of experiments (doe), preliminary
examination of subject of research, defining research problem, selection of the responses, selection of
factors, levels and basic level; measuring errors of factors and responses, data preparation for anova,
factorial experiments
Unit V
Statistical analysis determination of experimental error : significance of the regression
coefficients, lack of fit of regression models, experimental optimization of research subject, problem
of optimization
Unit VI
Basic experiment-mathematical modeling : full factorial experiments and fractional factorial
experiments, response surface methodology (rsm) concept and importance of rsm, central composite
designs (ccd), second-order rotatable design (box-wilson design), orthogonal second-order design
(box-benken design)
