I. Nature of the Illness:
Pneumonia is a bacterial or viral infection of the lungs. It happens when an infection
causes the air sacs (alveoli) in your lungs to fill with fluid or pus.
Pneumonia can range from mild to severe. Symptoms can include fever, chills,
shortness of breath that can make hard for you to breath in enough oxygen to reach your
bloodstream.
This disease can usually be treated with antibiotics at home but some severe cases may
require time in hospital because if it's not treated right it can cause death.
II. Causes:
Many germs can cause pneumonia. The most common are bacteria and viruses in the air
we breathe. Your body usually prevents these germs from infecting your lungs. But
sometimes these germs can overpower your immune system, even if your health is generally
good.
Pneumonia is classified according to the types of germs that cause it and where you got the
infection.

Pneumonia is an infection that causes inflammation in one or both of the
lungs and may be caused by a virus, bacteria, fungi or other germs.
VIII. Summary & Conclusion
Pneumonia is an infection that inflames the air sacs in one or both lungs. Pneumonia is a
common terminal event in advanced dementia for which many patients receive
parenteral antibiotics. The aggressiveness of treatment is most strongly determined by
advance care planning, the patient's cultural background, and clinical features of the
suspected pneumonia episode.
