Subject- Open Channel Flow || Semester- 5th

Assignment 3 || July Dec 2025 || Odd Semester
Submission Due Date- 20/09/2025

1. A trapezoidal channel 10.0 m wide and having a side slope of 1.5H:1V is laid on a slope
of 0.020. The roughness coefficient N= 0.015. Find the normal depth for a discharge of
42 m3/s through the channel.
2. Assuming the width of channel as b, depth of flow as y, find the conditions for most
economic trapezoidal channel section.
3. Find the conditions for hydraulically efficient triangular and rectangular channel section.
A rectangular channel of 10 m wide carries a discharge of 85 cumec at a slope of 0.006.
Compute normal depth. Take manning’s n= 0.015.
4. ‘Uniform flow is not feasible without bed slope’- explain why.
5. A trapezoidal channel is having a bottom width of 6.5m, side slope 2H:1V is laid at a bed
slope of 0.0015. The manning’s roughness co-efficient is 0.016. Find the normal depth
for a discharge of 20 cumec through the channel.
6. A trapezoidal channel is 6.0 m wide and has a side slope of 0.5H:1V. If the bed slope of
the channel is 0.0004 and the manning’s n= 0.02, find the discharge which can make the
channel a hydraulically efficient section.
7. A rectangular channel 10 m wide has a normal depth of 3.0 m. If the bottom slope of the
channel is 0.0004, estimate the discharge in the channel. Take Manning’s n=0.014.
8. Find the discharge in the following channels with bed slope of 0.0006 and n=0.016.
a. Rectangular, B=3.0m, y0=1.20 m
b. Trapezoidal, B=3.0m, m=1.5, y0=1.10 m
c. Triangular, m=2.0, y0=1.50 m
9. On what slope, one should construct a 3 m wide rectangular channel having manning’s
n=0.014 so that critical flow occurs at normal depth of 1.2 m?
10.A rectangular channel of width 4 m is having a bed slope of 1 in 1500. Find maximum
discharge through the channel if n=0.012.
