Galatians lesson 2
PAUL DEFENDS THE GOSPEL TRUTH
Galatians 2:1-21
Key verse 2:16
“know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too,
have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing
the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.”
I. PAUL ACCEPTED BY THE APOSTLES (1-10)
1. Where did Paul go and with whom fourteen years later (1)? What did he set before them (2a)?
Why (2b)? What problem could have arisen from preaching the gospel publicly to a large
audience?
- He went with Barnabas, to Jerusalem and took Titus along as well; he set before them the
gospel he preached among the gentiles. These were examples of the saving grace of Jesus
Christ among the gentiles. He went to the leaders to ascertain the same gospel.
2. Why did Paul not force Titus a Greek to be circumcised (3, 4)? Whose slave did the false
brothers try to make the believers of? Why did Paul not give in to them for a moment (5)? What
can we learn from Paul who refused to compromise for even a moment and remain in the truth
of the gospel?
- Salvation is by faith, Paul stood by the gospel that was originally given to him. We must have
zeal for matters that are essential for salvation.
3. Why could those who seemed to be important add nothing to Paul’s message (6)? What likeness
and difference did they see in Paul and Peter (7, 8)?
- Peter and Paul had the same calling, both empasised Jesus Christ as the only way to acquire
eternal life. Who are we serving? Acknowledging the head of the church? Uphold Christ as
the head of the church.
4. How did James, Peter, and John view Paul and Barnabas’ message (9)? What work should both
sides continue to do (10)?
- They were supportive to God’s work, and established unity; it encouraged him to move on.
II. PAUL KEPT IN LINE WITH THE TRUTH OF THE GOSPEL (11-21)
5. How was Peter clearly in wrong when he came to Antioch 11, 12)? How did his action influence
upon others (13)?
- Peter had living before men problem, this led him to hypocrisy and the fear of men, we can’t
please God by living before men. This led others astray like Barnabas.
6. What did Paul rebuke Peter for (14)? Why can the Gentiles not be forced to follow Jewish
customs? What is the truth of the gospel?
- Paul urges Peter to lead by example, Justification is through faith by the Lord Jesus Christ,
we should correct our brothers in case they wrong us. We should have a Shepard heart like
Paul.
Galatians lesson 2
7. Why does Paul, a Jew by birth, not observe the law but put his faith in Jesus Christ 15, 16)? What
is the one way to be justified?
- No one can be justified by the observance of the law.
8. What becomes evident while we seek to be justified in Christ (17a)? What do the followers of
the law say in this (17)? Why does Paul not rebuild the law (18)?
- Salvation is not through personal merit, the law can’t save anyone, Paul once was very
zealous for the law but now trusted Jesus Christ for his salvation.
- Justification- our past has been forgiven.
9. What happened to Paul through the law and what was the purpose of this (19)? What happened
to Paul when he was crucified with Christ (20) what is the source of his life? Why does Paul not
return to the law to gain righteousness (21)?
- Paul died to the law, he no longer lived, since he was crucified with Christ, Christ is now the
source of His life, He lives a life of faith in the SON OF God who gave Himself up for him..
