FIELD VISIT REPORT: ORGANIC PAPAYA CULTIVATION
Date of Visit: 07/08/2025
Location: Chopella
Department: Agricultural Engineering
Participants: International school of technology and sciences for women
Objective:
To observe and understand the practices of organic farming with a focus on papaya cultivation,
including the types and application of organic fertilizers.
Overview of Visit:
Our field visit was conducted at an organic farm practicing sustainable agricultural methods,
particularly in the cultivation of papaya. The farm has adopted eco-friendly techniques, avoiding
the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The main objective was to gain first-hand
knowledge about organic methods and their effectiveness in fruit production.
Papaya Cultivation Observed:
Planting Method: Pit method with organic manure
Spacing: Approximately 1.8m x 1.8m for proper aeration and sunlight.
Intercropping: Some areas featured intercropping with legumes to improve soil fertility.
Irrigation Method: Drip irrigation system was used to ensure efficient water use.
Organic Fertilizers Used:
1. Vermicompost: Rich in essential nutrients and applied around the root zone to enhance
soil structure and microbial activity.
2. Panchagavya: A traditional Indian organic input made from cow products, used as a
foliar spray to promote plant growth and resistance to pests.
3. Neem Cake: Used as a soil amendment to control nematodes and soil-borne diseases.
4. Cow Dung Manure: Well-decomposed cow dung applied during pit preparation to
improve organic matter content.
5. Jeevamrutha: A microbial-rich liquid fertilizer prepared on-farm to boost plant health
and improve nutrient availability.
Key Observations:
The papaya plants appeared healthy, with vigorous growth and minimal pest infestation.
Fruits were uniformly developed and showed good marketable quality.
The farmer emphasized the importance of regular mulching and maintaining soil
moisture.
Conclusion:
The field visit offered valuable insights into the sustainable practices of organic papaya farming.
The use of organic fertilizers not only improved crop health but also contributed to long-term soil
fertility and environmental conservation. Such models can serve as a guide for promoting eco-
friendly agriculture among local farmers.
